US Open champions Simon Aspelin of Sweden and Julian Knowle of Austria beat the British brothers 6-4 6-3.

After a come-from-behind first-round victory on Monday against Argentine pair Sebastian Prieto and Martin Garcia, the lynchpins of Britain's Davis Cup team struggled against the top seeds.

It took less than 30 minutes for Aspelin and Knowle to claim the opening set after Murray and Murray failed on two break back chances.

The second set went equally summarily as the tournament favourites took an opening break to take a 3-0 lead and easily wrapped up the victory claiming a second break after a break-back from the brothers.

The British number one Andy Murray faces Frenchman Michaël Llodra in the second round of the singles draw on Thursday.

Spanish top-seed Tommy Robredo made an easy time of his second-round match on Wednesday beating Italy's Andreas Seppi 6-4 6-2.

Joining him in the third round was Russian Evgeny Korolev, who beat France's Marc Gicquel 6-4 7-6 (3).

Wednesday's other first-round victors included second seed Guillermo Canas and eighth seed Igor Andreev, Nicolas Mahut, Nicolas Lapentti, and Sebastien Grosjean.
