La Liga - Round-up: Sevilla stun Real Madrid

Real Madrid's perfect start to the Liga season came to a halt on Sunday, as Sevilla claimed a 2-1 win at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Shorn of the services of the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, Real carried little threat going forward and their defensive frailties of old reared their head again.

Marcelo was given a torrid time by Jesus Navas and he was at fault for the opening goal, as he failed to attack a cross and Navas stole in to head home on 33 minutes.

The game could have been beyond Real at the break were it not for Iker Casillas who made a couple of stunning saves - one in particular with his right boot to deny Dirinel Renato defied belief.

Luis Fabiano and Abdoulay Konko squandered fine headed chances and they were made to rue their profligacy when Pepe climbed high to head home a free kick to level the scores on 49 minutes.

Pepe's goal came a matter of seconds after Casillas had made a stunning save to keep out a Diego Perotti drive from all of three yards out, but the keeper was not helped out by his defenders.

Renato was allowed to stand unmarked seven yards from goal and he duly planted Adriano's cross on 67 minutes in to the corner to seal the three points.

Nikola Zigic climbed off the bench to fire Valencia to a 1-0 win at Racing Santander.

The Che were well short of their best; David Villa was effectively shut down by Marc Torrejon before limping off with an apparent hamstring injury.

The injury to Villa will be a worry for Valencia, but Zigic came on as his replacement and seized on a shocking backpass from Pablo Pinillas to score the only goal of the game on 61 minutes.

The win lifts Valencia on to the heels of the leaders, while defeat was tough on a Racing side who dominated for the most part.

Emiliano Armenteros claimed a piece of football history when scoring Xerez's first goal in the Spanish top flight, six games into the season. The Argentine put his side ahead on 47 minutes but they were pegged back by Malaga's Nigerian striker Victor Obinna.

Villarreal continued their miserable start to the Liga season when they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by 10-man Espanyol.

Espanyol defender Juan Forlin was shown a straight red card when he hauled Giuseppe Rossi down in the 14th minute with the Italian striker clean through on goal, but Villarreal could not find a way to goal.

Athletic Bilbao took an early lead at Real Valladolid but had defender Ustaritz sent off and Diego Costa equalised for the home side on the hour.

In four frantic minutes late in the second half, Nivaldo put the home side in front, Valladolid defender Alberto Marcos was dismissed for a second yellow card, Athletic striker Iker Munian made it 2-2 and Nivaldo was shown a straight red.

Real Mallorca lost 4-1 at Sporting Gijon and Getafe beat visiting Osasuna 2-1.

  1. i've figured it out why Barca fans always love­ commenting on Real Madrid articles. It gives them an­ opportunity to let out their frustration at not being­ rich enough, influential enough, having the largest­ trophy cabinet in the world and being the strongest­ team in the world. Madrid are flamboyant and will­ always be. It is the clubs philosophy. Barca are still­ wondering how they are going to get their fourth CL­ cup. As for the team, I am actually glad they lost, cuz­ they know what its like and what their mistakes are. It­ is a good shake up. Plus we lost to a team that is­ playing its strongest football in years...lets see how­ Barca fare against Sevilla and Valencia. Big deal if­ Madrid have the most expsnive players, but at the end­ of the day they are humans. And for those who say that­ RM are nothing without CR9 i say perhaps and just­ PERHAPS you are right. but then what is Barca without­ Messi??? NOTHING! And we have seen that in several­ games. Barca fans keep talking bout he 6-2 which is­ their best Madrid drubbing...but why do they forget the­ best drubbing MADRID GAVE TO THEM WAS 7-1!!!!
    In my­ opinion I think Raul should have been benched in favour­ of Higuain and Guti should have made way for VDVaart ­ or Granero much earlier. Marcelo could have done better­ but if he couldnt match Navas Pelegrinni should have­ put in Drenthe who is much better defensively. But good­ we drop a point now then later in the season. Good we­ lose now so we may learn and emerge much stronger over­ the net game. HALA MADRID.
