Serena Williams made a stuttering start to her bid to topple Dinara Safina from the world number one spot with an error-strewn 7-5 6-4 win over Estonian Kaia Kanepi in the first round of the China Open.
Safina, who must at least match Williams's progress over the next week in Beijing to retain the number one ranking, was equally unconvincing in her 6-4 6-4 victory over Italian Roberta Vinci earlier in the day.
Williams missed last week's Pan Pacific Open with knee and toe injuries and looked far from her best in her first singles match since her rant at a lineswoman at the US Open last month.
"I'm definitely not at 100 percent but I'm just fighting and trying to do the best I can," Williams said.
"It wasn't easy but I felt like I was hitting a clean ball. She's a really good player, she always plays tough."
The Australian Open and Wimbledon champion made nine unforced errors in the 83-minute encounter against the big-hitting Kanepi, who broke the second-seeded American three times.
Williams, though, always looked to have the edge on the big points and reached the second round of the $6.6-million event, keeping alive her hopes of reclaiming the top ranking, with a fifth break of serve when Kanepi went long.
"I would love to be number one," added 11-times Grand Slam winner Williams. "But I also want to pay the price to be number one. It'll come eventually. And if not, I'll just keep trying."
Top seed Safina's victory over 59th-ranked Vinci was certainly an improvement on her first-round loss to Taiwanese qualifier Chang Kai-chen at the Pan Pacific Open last week but was by no means commanding.
Broken early in both sets, Safina immediately evened up matters with breaks of her own but was then forced to scrap it out with the dogged Italian to claim victory.
"I'm satisfied with the match but there is still room to improve my game," said the 23-year-old Russian.
"I'm not thinking about (the ranking). I just think about the game. I think I am the 16th, 17th in the world to reach number one so it doesn't matter when you achieve it."
Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark suffered a first-round upset, crashing out 6-7 7-6 6-0 to Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.
Fourth seed Elena Dementieva, returning to the scene of her Olympic triumph last year, had no such problems with her opening match and dispensed with Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-4 6-0 in just over an hour.
Dementieva's sixth-seeded fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova damaged hopes of a first local champion with a 7-6 7-5 defeat of China's number two Zheng Jie.
The French Open champion, three times a finalist and winner of the 2006 title, battled back after Zheng grabbed service breaks early in both sets to secure a place in the second round.
Her compatriot Vera Zvonareva, seeded seventh, also progressed 6-2 6-2 against Romania's Sorana Cirstea, while ninth seed Victoria Azarenka beat her fellow Belarussian Olga Govortsova 6-1 6-3.

Pointing out the blindly obvious may offend you for some reason, however, turning up at supposed lesser tournaments and losing in the early rounds, while actually bothering at Grand Slams quite correctly doesn't make you the number one in the world. If she showed these tournaments, ones she obviously doesn't regard in any shape or form, the respect they deserve, then she probably would be number one. You can't have your cake and eat it.
Go Serena!
Delores B just because you don't agree with someone don't need to call any names. we all have different opinions...but in the and we all love tennis
let pepole talk serena just play your game when you are good most people have things to say . i love YOU and Safina because you are fighters ,Keep doing the good work Serena the game is about competion you won the slams because you fought for them sAFINA also have the titles because she worked hard as well so stay focused girls we will support who ever does well good luck all
Re Kruchinkin
You are not a fan of Serena, you are a hypocrite and a phony. What battle did Serena as her fans to fight for her. And further more, she is competing for the number one ranking because unfortunately, your girl Safina cannot hold on to it. she is not winning and Slams or tournament slam because she chokes everytime she faces or look at the opponent, that is not Serena's fault. She is only 543 points ahead of Serena, if she loses early in the tournament and she does not make it to the finals and win this championship game, she loses her ranking to Serena. And as far as Serena getting "way too comfortable in the circuit" How uncomfortable do you want her to be? Spin or stand on her head will that make you happy? A---hole get a life. Jerk!
She's not the French Open Champion, Kuznetsova is! She is the Australian and Wimbledon champ.
i´m getting a litle bit tired of this people complaining that serena should be n.1 because of the grandslam and all, don´t get me wrong i love serena, she is a fighter! But i think she is getting way to confortable in the circuit, having people fighting her batles! theres a sistem of points and that sistems says that regardless of safina not having a grand slam, she has done more than enough this year to be n. 1! that´s it!
stop complaining! Serena has to understand that she can´t go around losing every other week, in tournaments that she shouldn´t be losing and then win a grand slam and expect to be n.1! what are the other players, figurants...???
Svetlans Serena has two very large tittle's
WE LOVE YOU SERENA.KEEP IT UP
FROM INDIA!!!!!!!!
Serena, tittle only counts!!!! Any other result is a disappointment!!! Come on, Serena!!!!
