The England and Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder knows he must play in Europe to win a place in Fabio Capello's World Cup squad and featured for the Italian club on loan last season.

Major League football commissioner Don Garber has confirmed talks are ongoing with Milan over the transfer.

Beckham told the Mail on Sunday: "There are other options available, but none that will stop me going to Milan. It is close to being finalised."

On Saturday evening Capello names his squad for the final qualifiers away to Ukraine and at home against Belarus, with England having already qualified.

However the Italian, who coached Milan in the Nineties to four Scudettos and victory in the Champions League, is expected to select his strongest available squad.

"I had a marvellous time there. They're a great club," Beckham added of Milan.

The former England captain came under fire from supporters in the USA after extending his original loan agreement with the Rossoneri into the MLS season, with many questioning his desire to focus on the North American championship.

For this American close season - which begins in January - Beckham has been linked to Tottenham Hotspur, with manager Harry Redknapp's interest well known; however he said he would not join a Premier League club.

"I've always said since I left United that to play for another English club would be difficult," he concluded.

  3. Svetlana, your post actually made me pull a face in disgust.. how can you say that beckham has no passion to play for England?...Beckham has more money and fame than any other footballer could only dream of, he doesn't need to play for england anymore for the exposure!..he does it because he loves his country, and is still extremely proud to wear his national shirt.. Beckham was and still is one of the finest talents that football has ever produced, his dead ball accuracy and crossing ability is envied by aspiring footballers everywhere,
as for your opinion that capello is being forced to play Becks.. i've never heard such utter rubbish in my life.. Capello will always play the best man for the job, and i don't know about anyone else, but when were preparing for a world cup, i'd much rather have becks on the bench than some over-rated untested blackburn player or something..
at the end of the day Becks has a wealth of expereicne that he still instills on the England squad, he's capable of reading a game and doing exactly what is needed to grind out a result, and that is priceless... he would walk into any national team..

Look to the US for other kinds of sports entertainment:

Had a dream to see the Superbowl, Daytona races, the Masters Golf tournament, Indianapolis car racing or an NBA All Stars Basketball game.

  5. Becks has never had pace, but what he has got is world class vision, he missed most of the qualifying games under Mclaren and was still the player with most assists. We are graced at the moment with players that have blistering pace, but what Becks offers is a final product something that will potentially unlock the world class teams in the last quarter of the game.

  6. ....mmmmmm ....... and what age is Giggs? .... what age was Teddy Sheringham while still at the top flight? I am not DB's biggest fan but he can make a pass to win a match and that what might be required. Yes, there are younger players that will run 4k more in 90 minutes, but the game is about putting the ball in the opponents net. If England were sorted without DB then Capello wouldn't entertain the idea - he doesn't play favourites. It is also worth noting that DB, like Giggs, is probably the first of a generation of 100% athlete footballers, who consciously managed fitness regime, diet, and lifestyle. This can only lead to longevity in their playing careers.

  8. roody_poocandyass, you wouldnt know class if it walked upto you and said here i am, the guy proves season after season that he is dedicated to FOOTBALL he has passion, skill and will outplay alot of younger ones these days, others should take a leaf from his book and show passion like he do`s, if all the england squad had this passion then the world cup would be ours everytime, he lives for FOOTBALL ( not soccer what ever that means), we invented the game so we kinda know what its called....FOOTBALL) we actually use our feet in the game!!!!!

  11. beckham is a liability when the oppo have the ball, and is only effective with dead-ball situations. We do have world class players such as rooney and gerrard, and beckham's presence has a negative affect on the dynamics of the squad. Also because he relies so much on the hollywood pass, the play misses the midfield out and then the Man U media machine criticises gerrard and lampard off for not reproducing their club form.. they are now producing the goods and get lots of touches of the ball, whilst beckham is preening himself on the bench ... i wonder if these things are related.

Big mistake coming to America? Please...he made his first mistake going to Spain.

We don't want him in America. You guys can have him back. Take him for free, like the always injured Owen. You'll see he can't produce ANYTHING anymore.

  14. Milan is missing Kaka. Not Ancelloti as much as Kaka. So Beckham cannot do anything about it. Beckham is 33 or 34 years old. He is past in football, maybe not in modeling, but in football he certainly is. I think he doesn't deserves to play in England World Cup team because there are so many better players who deserve to play. Playing in US league is nothing like playing in best European leagues. US league looks amateur comparing to best European leagues. So, if Capello invites Beckham, it will be only because of Beckham name, his popularity and something he was, not something he is now. It will be so unfair to other players. Beckham is acting unfair too. He knows he is so far from his best performances but he still insists to play for England team. It seems to me, that Capello has some kind of obligation to invite him to play. At least Beckham thinks so. Capello is often asked what Beckham needs to do play for England team and Capello is under pressure to invite him. Capello shoud pay attention to young players who are the future of any national players. Old and fame searching player is not worth attention. Beckham loves himself more than his team success. It's so selfish. Let him show me I am wrong. You, England fans who are judging me, just think: is Beckham more important than national team???

From Svetlana, on Sun 4 Oct 11:34AM
  15. Shame a man who wants to be seen as an ambassador for English football can't see his way clear to play for an English team. Still supose Milan fits in with Madams wish to dominate the catwalk.

    From hawx_crew_360, on Sun 4 Oct 11:06AM
  17. Milan are not the same team when Becks left and will probably be in mid table obscurity when he arrives. I think they will end up in the Europa league if their not careful. I'm not sure how playing in the current Milan side will help him. The coach cant coach and is no replacement for Ancelloti.

  20. Ok, So I never comment on these articles, but I just feel I have to on this one!! Beckham, is world class, a match winner. I believe he has been successful in every team he has played for, and in every country! I cannot think of many English players that had success overseas, let alone playing for 2 or 3 overseas leagues.

Of course, he is older, maybe has the yard or two short of pace, but how you can leave him out of the squad I do not know! In fact I would be in disbelief! The fact is, games are often one by one chance, one moment of genius, that is the difference. That my friends, is Beckham! I still think he has the best crosses and long passes in the game, when I see him play live for the team I am quite simply stunned with the accuracy he achieves. How you can leave someone like him out, someone that can take the vital free kick under pressure, or deliver a vital cross to save or win a game is crazy. And yes, people in the team look up to him, they feel confident in him and he is a decent bloke who will always help out and still be proud just to warm the bench for his country is he has too. People often criticise him a lot, I used too also, but I think he is always proud to wear the shirt, and yes he has lots of money etc. etc. but he is humble and quite quiet about it.

Keep him in the squad! He might play @#$% all game, but if we get a free kick like against Greece, or need crosses flying in to win a game in the last minutes, he is the man. He will always give it everything, and I bet if he is not included you will still see him in the crowd in SA, england shirt on. He is quite simply a MATCH WINNER! Jesus I went on a bit there............
