Huelkenberg to 'match' Barrichello

Reuters - Wed, 04 Nov 16:23:00 2009

Formula One's newest recruit Nico Huelkenberg has said he will match Rubens Barrichello at Williams next year.

2009 Valencia ART Hulkenberg - 0

"I hope that I will be on his pace right from the beginning and that I can match his speed and results and maybe even beat him at some point," the 22-year-old German said.

Hulkenberg, this year's GP2 champion and Williams reserve driver, has been promoted to the race seat in an all-new line-up with 37-year-old Barrichello revitalised after helping Brawn to the constructors' title.

The Brazilian won twice this season, adding to the nine victories he took for Ferrari when he partnered seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher, and is Formula One's most experienced driver.

Hulkenberg has the same manager as Schumacher, Willi Weber, and a reputation as a driver who - like McLaren's 2008 champion Lewis Hamilton - has won titles in every category he has entered.

A big supporter of the late Brazilian Ayrton Senna and Schumacher in his youth, Hulkenberg is looking forward to racing alongside Barrichello.

"I just want the best team-mate I can get, one who is quick and experienced and a good driver, and that's what I see in him," said the youngster, who could be one of six Germans on the 2010 starting grid.

"I think I would be stupid not to take advice from him or see how he works through a race weekend or a race. I can learn a lot from his experience and from him.

"I think it's pretty positive from my point of view, a guy with such experience is a good help for me, for a rookie in F1. It couldn't be much better than that.

"Plus, he's still quick and a good racer as we have seen this season, I think it's a good package."

Some of F1's rookies had a hard time this season, with Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari and France's Romain Grosjean failing to score after being drafted in mid-season at Toro Rosso and Renault respectively.

Hulkenberg, whose Japanese predecessor Kazuki Nakajima also failed to score in 17 races, was not too concerned about his lack of mileage in the car.

"All I can do is take the testing I get and use the simulator as much as I can in the factory and that's it," he said.

"I'm pretty excited racing for Williams. I think they are real racers, I've been with them now for two years and I really like the people and the atmosphere in the team.

"Of course they expect something from me, otherwise they wouldn't have put me in the car. But they are not telling me I have to win next year or something like that."

  2. I dont think hell be on the pace immeadietly, but given time (5/6 races) hullkenberg could well be the next world champion, quite possibly not in the 2010 season but more likely 2012, i reackon he will have a close shot at the title in 2011 but wont make it, unless he turns out to be another rookie in a car he doesnt understand and cant drive with reasonable pace like J.Alguersuari and R.Grosjean, toro rosso and renault made a big mistake putting them in a F1 car, my advice to the teams, dont repeat those mistakes in 2010!! but back to the subject, hullkenberg seems like he is a good race driver and i hope he does well in F1 but to beat rubens in his first season NO CHANCE!

  5. Since 2007, the analysis of new drivers for F1 was modified to incorporate "The Lewis Hamilton Effect" (so to speak) in order to track a driver from his beginnings, as young as 8 or 9 in some cases, to the day he threatens to join the F1 grid. As good as Sebastian Vettel is, even he didn't match Lewis' achievements in the feeders he was in. Huelkenberg has that same path though, winning every championship he has raced in, and is no doubt going to be the best new driver of 2010.

One thing he needs to watch out for is the arrogance of his words. I mean, saying words like "I hope that I will be on his pace right from the beginning." How up himself to have such hopes!!! And on top of that, he has said he is better than Senna by admitting that Ayrton is one of his heroes. How dare he!!!!!

P.S. I would just like to point out, that that is based on the Lewis Hamilton Assumption Quota, where we wre allowed to call drivers arrogant should they even mention Ayrton's name or dare to hope that they might beat their teammate. That is what happened at the start of 2007, so I expect the same people to be on here shortly making the same claims.

P.P.S. Sorry, forgot something. He's not black, so the racists will like him, and he's not British, which will satisfy the rest of you petty minded idiots.

P.P.S. Also, there's every chance that this guy could be Germany's next World Champion before Vettle manages to lift the crown, he really is that good.

  11. Misleading titles again - he sounds like he is bragging but the first words in his quote are 'I hope'!
He sounds like he is prepared to learn and from his results so far he is an able student.
Also I have a real feeling that Williams will do well next year, they have improved throughout this year, the major change will be no refuelling and the Williams car has always had the largest fuel tank so their change will be less radical.
We just have to keep our fingers crossed for the performance and reliability of the Cosworth engine.
