Erik Hamren, coach of Norwegian champions Rosenborg Trondheim, is to take charge of Sweden.
"To become national team coach has been a big dream of mine and I'm very grateful Rosenborg have given me this chance," Hamren told the Swedish FA's website.
"At the same time I am happy to continue working with Scandinavia's best team, Rosenborg, in 2010."
Hamren will combine both jobs until he takes over full-time at Sweden next August.
The 52-year-old replaces Lars Lagerback, who quit last month following Sweden's failure to reach the 2010 World Cup.
"We are very happy and proud to hire Erik Hamren," said Sweden FA chairman Lars-Ake Lagrell.
Hamren's Sweden contract will run until the end of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
