Stephen Ireland feared he was going to die when he was rushed to hospital after complaining of dizziness during a Carling Cup tie with Fulham in September.
The Manchester City star had no-one near him when he suddenly felt unwell. He was promptly substituted by Mark Hughes but when his symptoms failed to improve, he was taken to Wythenshawe Hospital for exhaustive tests.
"Thankfully it wasn't too serious because at the time I thought that was the end of me," he told the Manchester Evening News. "I don't know what it was. I have had every test that there is and I still don't know but it was a bit of a strange scare."
He added: "It took me a while to get right but I am back on track. Everything is looking positive."
Ireland returned to action just 12 days afterwards. However, he has since lost his regular starting berth, having failed to find the form that saw him identified as one of the best young players in the country last term.
He was a substitute for Sunday's draw at Birmingham, with a 30-minute appearance failing to prevent City being held to a fourth consecutive draw.
Although the big-spending Blues have lost ground on Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, they are now in fourth spot, with Ireland confirming City are still pleased with their recent efforts.
"We have almost got a brand new squad but we have clicked really well," he said. "We have to get on with it if we want to achieve things and win things this year."

Carling Cup - Stevie Ireland was MY MAN OF THE MATCH!!! Good to see Superman back to his best. He took his goal b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l.l.y and put numerous other chances on a plate for the lads. He tracked back to win the ball and regain possession. Some of the passes were b.e.a.u.t.i.f.u.l!!!
Stevie Ireland staked his claim for a regular place in Mark Hughes´side with a glittering performance and City´s early goal. Stevie Ireland receives a huge ovation as he departs with Vladimir Weiss replacing the goalscorer!!!
"We" have not won a game while Stevie Ireland has been on the bench. He is much more influential than Tevez.
Superman has just not been the same since he had this illness, I for one can`t wait to see him back to his best, he is a vital part of our best formation.
We Must find a formation that get's Stevie Ireland onto the pitch from the start. He is the link up man between midfield & striker's but, he also has the engine to get between both 18yrd boxes!!!
Hughes!!! Please give Stevie Ireland full 90 mins, he makes HUGE differences!!!
Nice greetings from Kirkdale-Liverpool ;-)))
his dizzyness is caused by the shame of not playing for his country.
