Premier League - Great players, rubbish managers

Eurosport - Thu, 04 Dec 19:26:00 2008

Cheer up Roy Keane, you are in good company - scores of world-class players have failed to make the grade in management and your departure from Sunderland puts you in good company.

1999 Manchester United Roy Keane - 0

Bryan Robson - The first of Fergie's Manchester United 'disciples' to establish himself in management, Captain Marvel set an unhappy precedent for the likes of Keane and Paul Ince. Lasted seven mediocre years at Middlesbrough, the most notable of which saw Boro reach two cup finals and go down. Subsequently failed at Bradford, West Brom and Sheffield United.

Ruud Gullit - Skippered the Dutch to their only major tournament success in 1988 but proved too intelligent to be much good at management. Became the first foreign boss to win the FA Cup while at Chelsea but then fell out with the board. Fell out with Alan Shearer at Newcastle, and recently fell out with the whole LA Galaxy squad during a nine-month stint.

Glenn Hoddle - Why it is a bad idea for national teams to take a flier on unproven managers. Hoddle's player-manager spells at Swindon and Chelsea offered little indication of the faith-healing madness he would bring to the England job. Insisted not only on taking part in training but showboating throughout and repeatedly nutmegging a bemused Martin Keown.

Ossie Ardiles - At least he had the guts to impose his own tactical blueprint at Tottenham. Pioneered the novel 5-0-5 formation at the start of the 1994/95 season, employing an attacking quintet of Juergen Klinsmann, Teddy Sheringham, Ilie Dumitrescu, Darren Anderton and Nicky Barmby. Tragically, it failed and Ardiles was out of a job by October.

Alan Ball - If a flat cap and disarming honesty were enough to be a top manager, 1966 World Cup-winner Ball would have been a dugout legend - but Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho prove that being a lovely man is not a pre-requisite for success. Was nice enough to gain employment at Blackpool, Portsmouth, Stoke City, Exeter City, Southampton, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

Bobby Charlton - Another England hero from 1966, Charlton's maturity, leadership and track record seemed tailor-made for management. Took Nobby Stiles with him to Preston North End where he became player-manager. It did not go well, and he was off at the end of the season.

John Barnes - 'Super Caley Go Ballistic Celtic Are Atrocious' is pretty much all that needs to be said about Barnes's disastrous tenure at Parkhead.

And two greats who succeeded:

Franz Beckenbauer - Der Kaiser won the 1990 World Cup with West Germany, then proceeded to manage in brief, successful bursts. Won the French title during a single season at Marseille, then snaffled a Bundesliga and a UEFA Cup in spells of six and two months at Bayern Munich in 1994 and 1996.

Johan Cruyff - Introduced a 3-1-2-3-1 tactical system (seriously) at Ajax, which the club used to win the Champions League some years after Cruyff's departure. Then created Barcelona's Dream Team, winning the 1992 European Cup and signing legendary players such as Romario, Hristo Stoichkov, Michael Laudrup and Ronald Koeman.

  4. yeah he has to sit on the sidelines and watch his team underperform but that is management and you need to try and turn it around instead of leaving.

  5. HEY! Whats with the Wigan bashing??

Yes Heskey is rubbish but Bruce is a good manager and in my opinion Keane has just left when it got hard instead of roughing it out.

  7. Is it the fault of Roy Keane that Sunderland has been under performing or is it the players fault that they cannot hold a match together in defense or take control in attack? It's not like he can run on the pitch and help out. He has to stand or sit on the sidelines and watch his team flop about like fish out of water whenever the ball is in their half.

  8. I tend to agree, being a great player does not equate to being a great manager. If you go back to when Souness joined Glasgow Rangers, they were so poor, anything would be an improvement. It also helped he has millions to spend, which really started the money mad transfers....then Souness hits a purple patch and wants to run to his mammy at Liverpool.

I don`t think somehow many quality players wanted to come to Sunderland, did Keane not say he was limited by what he could attract.

Offering funny money does not equate to success. trust me, I support Partick Thistle in the Scottish 1st Div, we have no money though we always laugh!

In any case, if you offered me a contract for 3 years, on shed loads of cash, do you think I`m going to bust my balls in a @#$% wee dump against some miniscule team? Look at Leeds in the cup! ( hahahahahha gaun the wee team!)

  9. I can't believe Graeme Souness wasn't on the list. As a player he only made Liverpool stronger. As a manager he set them down a path that the team is still trying to recover from.

  10. I think the author of the article is outright intellectually limited or simply doesnt understand the complex dynamics of the beautiful game. That Sunderland is underperforming is beyond Roy and if the management resort to signing second hand players, what do you expect Roy to do. C'mon.... Think like a proper undastender of the beautiful game.

  12. Rubbish managers. Imagine Hughes playing Versel ahead of Elano in a match against man u. oh no. wat a mess

  13. Kenny Dalglish? Fergie never could get the better of King Kenny either as a player or manager....

  14. Sorry to see Keano go, who's gonna take his place now, hello to Mike Ashleys favourite manager - Sam Alladyce

  15. Roy Keane deserves all the accolades both as a player and as a manager. Sunderland had been through a bad spell, and as tough man he thought this was the right time to go. People should bear in mind that because of his reputation in the game players like Cisse, Diouf, Marbrangue signed for Sunderland. I am very sure Keane will take a deserve rest and we shall see him come back strong. We love you Keane and you leave Sunderland with your heads UP. Thanks for your contribution to football.

    From amie.lily, on Thu 4 Dec 3:24PM
  16. And two greats who succeeded: - should read 3 greats!

You forgot about Paul "Luggy" Sturrock the legend.

From Alan, on Thu 4 Dec 3:24PM
  17. Steve Bruce, Kevin Keegan, and Mick Mcarthy should never be managers. They are the most depressing people in football and once youre up the creek with them you aint getting out of it. I'd end up committing suicide having to listen to these all folorn, woe is me, sorry i try type managers. Keane should have stayed.

From Tom, on Thu 4 Dec 3:23PM
  18. The argument shouldn't be over whether good players make good managers. It should be over whether prospective managers should learn their trades at big clubs like Sunderland or Newcastle United. Good managers serve their time learning their trade before filling big boots. Alec Ferguson (East Stirlingshire, St. Mirren before Aberdeen and Man United). How old was Bob Paisley before he got the top job at Liverpool (55). Arsene Wengers' role call includes (Strasbourg(youth coach), Cannes(assistant),Nancy, Monaco & Grampus). Chief executives should think about that before employing retired players inexperienced in all matters managerial with over inflated egos.

From John, on Thu 4 Dec 3:19PM
  19. most managers would have brought sunderland back up, they seem to be a team not good enough for the premier but too good for the championship which is why their managers always get them promoted but fail to progress further. can't see keane being a success at management if the first sign of a problem he says he's not good enough and quits

    From cozypowell74752002, on Thu 4 Dec 3:07PM
  20. The standard of reporting on this site is beyond terrible. I may not have been a fan of Roy Keane, (since I support Liverpool and have never forgiven him for Saipan) but I know one thing, he isn't a rubbish manager. If he was, Sunderland would not be in the Premier League right now, they'd still be struggling to be promoted from the Champiopnship. If that was the situation and Keane was still in charge, then he would be rubbish. He's not a great manager but very few people, regardless if they were great footballers or not, are great managers at a young age or in their first job. Alex Chick, try providing evidence that he is rubbish you @#$%. Alex Sharrat as well, there's more to Keane's career than his bad moments, you might have actually passed off the @#$% you wrote if you gave a proper factfile of Keane's career. Both of you can't write a decent article, they can't even come up with a bad article, everything is @#$% @#$%. I thought Beijing bias during the Olympics was bad but the fact that Yahoo can't provide football fans proper articles to read & enjoy is more than annoying. The majority of not everything they write is @#$% @#$%, your as bad as the sun newspaper, if not worse.
