Liverpool have revealed that the hamstring injury suffered by star striker Fernando Torres is worse than first feared.
Torres had been expected to be out of action for two weeks with the injury he suffered during the Champions League victory against Marseille at Anfield on November 26.
However, the Spaniard has now been told by specialists that he will be out for at least four weeks - although Liverpool are refusing to put a timescale on his return to action.
"We first said two to three weeks but do not want to put a time on it now," said Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.
"He will come back when he is ready. We will not rush him back.
"We want to resolve this problem once and for all and we will make sure we do that."
Torres has already missed five weeks of the campaign with a similar complaint, although the Reds have coped superbly in his previous absences, recording victories over Manchester United and Chelsea.
It is the fifth hamstring injury Torres has suffered in the 16 months since his arrival at Anfield from Atletico Madrid, having been hit by three similar injuries on international duty and two now with his club.
Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League but have drawn their last two home games without scoring a goal, with new signing Robbie Keane still finding his form since his £20 million move from Tottenham in the summer.

Ryan Babel is class, he just needs a proper run in the team, shud have saved the Keane money and gone in for Villa or Huntelaar.
I hope torres gets well soon, injurys are inevitble with a player of his pace. Liverpool just need to have a bit of self belief without him though, there is more than enougth quality in this squad to win the leauge, come on you reds
Have some faith, liverpool fans... There are more to winning a title or a game than one player's plight... Tactics of Rafa this season have been excellent and the team play on the whole looks perfect... Liverpool will win the title, i m sure.
OK Torres and will be out for possibly another 4 weeks injured with a hamstring again but so far this season Liverpool have managed quite well without him so its not sooo bad, only problem is that how long will Liverpool play well enough to maximize points in the EPL. This is when I fear that the lack of depth in the Liverpool squad will begin to affect them, if you look at the display by Liverpool on Monday against the Hammers its bit of a concern and they could drop some points over December and Jan if they can't score goals especially at home. But I hope Torres gets well soon.
What a torrid time us Scousers are having. Torres injured, team not playing well, yet we have already qualified for the next stage of the Champions League and are top of The Premier League. Can't wait until we hit a run of "good" form.
I'm a Liverpool supporter and have been all my life, They are a great team with a lot of History. As much as i would love them to win the title, i still don't think they are strong enough to do it.
We have thrown away far to many point this season already. Hopefully the Pool will prove me wrong.
To the other 3 teams at the top i wish you all luck for the rest of the season and may the best team win.
Please take Heskey back, he would play well up front with Keane... Keane can't hit a barn door n Heskey would be on his arse as usual...(well worth 19 million I think just like keane not!!) Poor scouser scum.. bless
Form???!! The last time Liverpool had a run of form Maggie Thatcher was still in charge!
to any chelski utd or arsenal fan torres will be back for the newcastle game. rember we dont normally start coming into form til mid jan so we have not been playing well yet we r still top what does that say about the rest....
Before any wise @#$% says anything like who is Zenit - reminder of who screwed United at the start of the season. Have a look at CSK and where they are in the league and where they are in the Eufa cup. There are serious players here to be looked at
Oh dear, never mind Liverpool fans. Time to get out the videos of the 70s and 80s again methinks!
Zenit St Petersburg have two great players - Danny and Arshavin both available during the long Russian closed winter surely a loan deal can be agreed with good options too
Liverpool are a 2 man team! and when Keane and Torres play together they again become a 1 man team.
So what if they beat Chelsea and United, even the worst teams beat the best teams, look who's beat Arsenal and Liverpool this season.
And Torres aint best in world. 1 good season does not the best make!
CSK Moscow have one brilliant player Wagner Love 20 goals already this season. Nothing to do for 3 months. What the @#$% are liverpool doing, NOTHING
Keane will score when he gets the service!
Torres out , Keane forgot where the goal mouth is, Gerrard may get sick, and then? When will those stupid yanks wake up. we need strikers. Seriously good ones
Unless someone goes to Moscow and talks to some top strikers available through their closed winter season, Liverpool will win nothing. move your fukinasses
TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY
HE HE
COYBB
""Title contenders??? Keep dreamin red @#$%e!x""
Liverpool are title race LEADERS, you @#$%!
So Liverpool aren't the same team with one of the best strikers in the world? And United aren't the same without the current best player in the world? Well done to you all for figuring that one out. Isn't it pretty obvious that ANY team aren't the same if you take away the best players.......Idiots. I'm a United fan by the way.
