A double from Danny North gave Grimsby a 2-1 away victory at Saltergate and denied an in-form Chesterfield side a fifth straight win.Grimsby's goal led a charmed life in a first half marred by crowd trouble at both ends of the ground with police escorting at least 10 supporters from the stadium.
Peter Leven saw a 36th-minute header cleared off the line and a minute later Steve Fletcher hit the inside of a post.
Grimsby's Tom Newey was fortunate not to be sent off for a clear handball on the edge of the area but in first-half stoppage time, North turned Aaron Downes and scored from 10 yards.
Jamie Ward rattled a post in the 51st minute before North was denied by a good save from Barry Roche five minutes later.
But Grimsby went 2-0 up in the 78th minute when North and Downes collided in the box and the striker sent Roche the wrong way with the penalty. Ward pulled one back seven minutes from time but Grimsby held on for their third consecutive away win.
