Southend booked their place in the FA Cup fourth round with a 5-2 Essex derby win at home to League Two Dagenham on Saturday. The hosts took the lead in the 12th minute at Roots Hall when Dean Morgan's cross from the left byline was stabbed past veteran goalkeeper Tony Roberts at his near post by Charlie MacDonald.
But Dagenham were back on level terms after 32 minutes when Ben Strevens' low cross found Jon Nurse, who slotted home before the Daggers took the lead in the 59th minute when strike partner Strevens slammed the loose ball beyond Darryl Flahavan's dive.
The lead lasted just five minutes as Southend were on level terms again when Matt Harrold teed up Morgan and he blasted the ball into the top-left corner from just outside the box.
Southend regained the lead through Simon Francis who rifled the ball home through a crowded box in the 77th minute and the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Roberts was sent off after appearing to head-butt Peter Clarke four minutes from time.
Southend made sure of the win in stoppage time with Nick Bailey slotting home after sub goalkeeper Ed Thompson parried Morgan's shot. Morgan then added a fifth from a yard out following MacDonald's cut-back.
