Kilmarnock have signed Martyn Corrigan after the full-back's contract with Motherwell was terminated by mutual consent.
The 30-year-old agreed to join Killie more than a week ago but delayed his move out of respect to the family of tragic Well skipper Phil O'Donnell, who was laid to rest yesterday.
Corrigan has started only one game this season, a CIS Cup tie against Raith, after failing to impress manager Mark McGhee.
Corrigan told www.motherwellfc.co.uk: "It's been a really, really difficult decision to make, especially in light of what has happened at the club in the last week.
"I must let it be known that the deal was tied up long before the tragic events and I have tried to delay it as long as possible purely out of respect for the O'Donnell family.
"I love this club and the fans have been absolutely brilliant with me.
"From the day I arrived they have treated me with respect and supported me through good times and bad and I can't thank them enough for everything.
"It's with a heavy heart that I leave but I hope people understand that at my age, I really need first-team football and I need to play every week.
"The club will always hold a special place in my heart."
The defender, who played 272 games for Motherwell after signing from Falkirk in 1999, would have had a testimonial in 2009 if he had seen out his contract.
But two serious knee injuries in the previous two years hindered his chances of impressing McGhee this summer and he spent a month on loan to Dundee earlier this season.
