Quinton Fortune is training with Sunderland and could join the club "in the next week" according to manager Roy Keane.
The former Manchester United utility player has been at the Stadium of Light for the past month, having been without a club since leaving Bolton in the summer after an ill-fated spell at the Reebok.
"Quinton has been with us about a month and we'll make a decision on him in the next week," Keane told the club website of his former Manchester United team-mate.
"It's a case of helping each other out. We're having a look at Quinton, he's building his fitness up after a serious operation, but there'll be more news on that over the weekend."
Sunderland have made one signing so far this transfer window - the loan of Jonny Evans from United - as they look to beat the drop.
