Milner eyeing scoring streak

Mon 05 Jan, 04:30 PM

Aston Villa winger James Milner is hoping to go on a goalscoring run following his double against Gillingham in the FA Cup.Milner had not scored for Villa since netting twice in the remarkable 8-3 Carling Cup win at Wycombe while he was on loan from Newcastle in 2005, but he grabbed both goals as Villa overcame a tough examination at the Priestfield.

His first came after a good link-up with Stiliyan Petrov and he grabbed the winner from the penalty spot after his earlier effort had been cancelled out by Simeon Jackson's strike for the League Two side.

Milner said: "It was about time I got on the scoresheet.

"I have done everything but score so it was nice to get a couple - the main thing was getting through because we knew it was going to be a tough game.

"Hopefully I can get a few more now before the end of the season. But as long as I am contributing and creating goals - which I have been - and as long as the team is winning, it does not matter if I don't score again as long as the team does well and gets into the top four.

"I seem to go on little runs and spurts with goals. I might not score for a few months, then I might get a few in consecutive games. Hopefully I can improve on that and get a more steady supply."

Gillingham - 74 places below Villa in the league standings - rallied well after Milner's well-taken opener in front of a packed house and Milner admitted it was an enjoyable atmosphere to play in.

"It was important that we got the early goal but we never thought it would get any easier," he added.

"It helped to quieten the crowd because they were always going to have an influence - it is a great stadium to play at.

"It's an older ground where the crowd bounce off you. You hear all the comments. It is a great place to play, as I know from playing there in the cup with Leeds.

"Gillingham got into it with the equaliser and it showed good spirit from the lads to come up and get the winner."

The penalty winner came after stand-in Gillingham captain Adam Miller was adjudged to have fouled Ashley Young in the box.

And although Miller was clutching Young's shirt after the match, he admitted to feeling very hard done by.

"It looked a soft penalty, believe me it was soft," Miller said. "Referees always feel like they are doing the right thing, but it doesn't always mean in favour of the big teams.

"The boys' confidence was high and in my mind we had the chance to win it.

"It was a nice feeling and a day I enjoyed. Hopefully there's more to come.

"But as great as this day was, our main priority this season is to win promotion.

"We shouldn't be in this league with the players and quality we have in the changing room."

Midfielder Miller, who led Gillingham in the absence of the banned Barry Fuller, had spoken before the match of a desire to play in front of a sizeable crowd at Villa Park in a replay, and it was again on his mind until the heartbreaking late spot-kick.

He added: "If the truth be known, I was already thinking about the replay and playing in front of 50,000 fans at their place.

"There was a great atmosphere here playing in front of 10,000, so can you imagine what 50,000 would sound like?

"I won't get the chance to find out now. I'm so disappointed."
