Shrews hand Calliste trial chance

Mon 05 Jan, 02:30 PM

Shrewsbury manager Paul Simpson has confirmed former Manchester United and Liverpool forward Ramon Calliste is on trial at the League Two club.Simpson revealed "a couple" of trialists will come in and train with his squad over the next few weeks as he looks for some January bargains, while one unnamed player is already at the club.

Simpson told the club's official website: "I've agreed to take a look at him (Calliste) over the next couple of days in training. If I think we need to have a further look then I may play him in the reserves."

The Shrews boss also brushed aside rumours of expensive bids for two of his own players and admitted he had received no enquiries for any of his side.

The absence of captain Ben Davies against Bradford fuelled speculation but Simpson added: "Ben was left out because I felt it was the right thing to do for that particular game. You can never be 100% sure in football but I'm sure that Ben will play for us very soon and will be with us until the end of the season and then hopefully for even longer.

"We've had no bids for any of our players and I haven't even had enquiries to take players away on loan. That situation could change the minute this interview finishes but for someone to be talking about a £750,000 bid for one player and a £600,000 bid for another, that has not happened."
