Big Chance For SMALLJOHN

Mon 05 Jan, 12:09 PM

TUESDAY'S SELECTIONS:

KEMPTON: 2.20 Ishibee, 2.50 Mutamared, 3.20 Sestet, 3.50 Dansilver, 4.20 Moon Crystal, 4.50 Frosty's Gift.

SEDGEFIELD: 1.00 Double Hit, 1.30 Mardood 2.00 All For The Cause, 2.30 Whatcanyasay, 3.00 Jethro Tull, 3.30 Bamby.

SOUTHWELL: 12.40 Charlotte Grey, 1.10 Rub Of The Relic, 1.40 SMALLJOHN (NAP), 2.10 Chookie Hamilton, 2.40 La Estrella, 3.10 Northern Empire, 3.40 Jack Rackham.

DOUBLE: Smalljohn and La Estrella.

With the arctic blast taking its toll on the National Hunt campaign, the all-weather tracks are doing their bit to keep racing on the road and money can be made by backing Smalljohn at Southwell.

It is this time of year that all-weather racing really comes to the fore and while the standard does not please everybody, their contribution to the Levy is vital.

While the Hospitality At Southwell Racecourse Claiming Stakes is of a very low standard, you get paid out the same amount as you would for a horse at the same price in the Derby.

Smalljohn actually has a decent wins to run ratio having scored four times from 15 starts.

He is in great heart at present having won three of his last six races and been out of the frame only once.

With a rating of 74 he is 6lb clear of his main rival but only has to concede 1lb so as long as he runs to form he should take a great deal of beating.

Don Cantillon is as shrewd as they come and he has placed La Estrella very cleverly to bring up a hat-trick.

The six-year-old goes in search of a four-timer in the William Hill January Sale - Better Odds! Claiming Stakes.

His three wins have seen the handicapper move his mark up from 80 to 88 but as this is not a handicap that is irrelevant.

St Savarain is in fact in receipt of 9lb and the handicapper only rates him 2lb inferior but that rival is in nothing like the same for as La Estrella and a fourth win in a row beckons.

Kevin Ryan's Northern Empire looks fairly treated for the William Hill January Sale - Why Bet Elsewhere? Handicap.

Ryan is always worth keeping a close eye on in sprint handicaps and he has employed the services of all-weather king Chris Catlin on this occasion.

This Namid gelding was rated as high as 94 in the summer but a lacklustre spell saw his rating drop dramatically.

He took advantage of that on his penultimate start at Wolverhampton and was beaten only half a length off a 4lb higher mark last time.

The Southwell Fibresand holds no problems for him as he has won on it before so he should be right in the reckoning.

It is a long time since Moon Crystal got her head in front but the Williamhill.com Sale - Better Odds! Fillies Handicap at Kempton should provide a good opportunity to pick up the winning thread.

Ed Dunlop's filly won at Kempton last March and although she has not followed up that initial victory, she has been running with credit in her most recent outings and is difficult to discount.

At Sedgefield, Jethro Tull should go close in the Smooth Radio, Love Music, Love Life Handicap Chase.
