FA Cup - Managers: Saints upset at offside goal

Eurosport - Mon, 05 Jan 10:56:00 2009

Reaction from the FA Cup third round matches, including Southampton boss Jan Poortvliet slamming Manchester United's offside opening goal.

FOOTBALL Jan Poortvliet Southampton - 0

Southampton 0-3 Manchester United

Jan Poortvliet: "It (the first goal) was offside. The referee's assistant should see it because he is on the same line as the player. They told me (Paterson) went with two feet (for the sending off). It was one foot and it was on the ball. It changed the game because you are always having to come back. I think the penalty was cheap. The referee was in the best position. I think the referees in England are the best in the world. But our side, we never get decisions like that.

"It's a shame. I feel sorry for the boys because I think they worked hard. If only we could have created more opportunities."

Alex Ferguson: "We could have done it more comfortably but 3-0 is a satisfactory score.

"I think if the referee had booked him (Paterson) in the first minute it might have calmed him down a bit. It was exuberance more than than anything else. He was charging about a bit and tackling, all the things you expect from a young player and he was a bit over-enthusiastic maybe."

Gillingham 1-2 Aston Villa

Mark Stimson: "I'm proud of the players first and foremost. I thought they did well out there today playing against a very strong Aston Villa side and gave a good account of themselves.

"On the result, I'm frustrated, we were close to maybe getting a draw and going back to Villa Park."

Martin O'Neill: "It was really tough. I came here last week and knew it would be tough. If the players didn't know it would be tough they did after 10 minutes. They are very strong. They played very well and good luck to them this season.

"It was a terrific goal by James, very well worked, a nice goal indeed."

Preston North End 0-2 Liverpool

Alan Irvine: "People said they were disappointed that Steven Gerrard was playing, and I suppose I was pleased initially to see Fernando Torres on the bench. But then again our lads have been excited ever since the draw, and that was because they wanted to play against Liverpool's big stars. It has been an education for them. For Sean St Ledger to be facing Torres was a great education for him.

Sammy Lee: "Steven is a top professional, he has had the full support of this club, and you see what he is after that performance. He is a great footballer, he produced a terrific performance. Things have been written about him, but we know that he is a terrific professional, a model professional and this club will put all our support behind Stevie Gerrard. But he is a great servant for this club, a great ambassador and we will continue to support him throughout, he's a terrific guy."

Manchester City 0-3 Nottingham Forest

Mark Hughes: ''I know exactly what is needed here. The work we do on a day-to-day basis makes players better. They have to be brave enough to perform in matches. Today some were guilty of not doing that. We know the areas of the squad we have to strengthen and we will try to do that. It is not going to happen in this window, or even two or three. We need more time.

'We are bitterly disappointed with the level of performance that we produced today. Nottingham Forest fully deserved to win. 'They showed more desire and energy in their play. They forced us into errors and took their chances.''

John Pemberton (temporary boss before Billy Davies takes charge on Monday): Billy spoke with the players this morning but he wanted to leave it today because it was such short notice. I just wanted the lads to give a good account of themselves and get them ready to play.

''Winning is fantastic but on Monday morning I will be back to my normal job, getting the reserve team ready for a game against Lincoln City away on Wednesday. Today was probably the highlight of my career. To win 3-0 against a Manchester City side stuffed with talent - and deserve it - was fabulous.''

Chelsea 1-1 Southend

Luiz Felipe Scolari: "It was not very good - but on the pitch, what can I say to my players? They had 15 chances to score a goal, and they didn't score. Carlo (Cudicini) didn't make a save. Our mistake was not scoring a second goal. We have to discuss the mistakes we made. This happens in football. I have these players, I believe in these players, and now we need to train."

Steve Tilson: "We were playing one of the top sides in this country and this is a fantastic day for the club, our supporters and everyone involved today. We rode our luck at times and you need that in games like this. Our goalkeeper has made some great saves and Chelsea could have been comfortably in front from the chances they created."

Hartlepool 2-0 Stoke

Chris Turner: "I couldn't have asked any more of the individuals. They were up against a very strong, powerful team, but they stuck at their task and were very concentrated. When that whistle went it was the best feeling I have ever felt even though as a player, I played and won at Wembley."

Tony Pulis: "It was disappointing. I didn't think there was much in the game in the first half - if anything, I thought we were the better team. Then when they got their goal, from that point onwards, I thought Hartlepool were the better team and deserved to win."

Forest Green 3-4 Derby County

Jim Harvey: "We were 3-2 up again in the second half and I thought that might be enough but it was not to be. To take the lead three times against Derby was magnificent for a club our size and I think the people here had terrific entertainment. But on reflection, we had it within our grasp to win it - we had believed we could do that for the whole game."

Chris Hutchings: "We were very lucky to go in level at 2-2 at half-time. We kept going at it right to the death - I suppose it was a classic cup tie with lots of goals and tackles and a sending off for our penalty. It was a good, honest cup tie and I'm glad we stayed strong to win it."

Macclesfield Town 0-1 Everton

Keith Alexander: "They are a good team and we made life difficult for them. Everton had the majority of the play but we had the better chances. On another day at least one of them would have gone in and Nat Brown needed to put that one away. That has been the story of our season. We have been playing good football but conceding sloppy goals and that has happened again. I have seen penalties like that given but not often against Premier League teams. But I don't want to moan."

Steve Round: "His[goalkeeper Tim Howard] form has been excellent. I have been very impressed with him. Credit to Tim. He had little to do all game but kept his concentration and made a great save at the end. Macclesfield were hanging in there and took us to the wire. They almost nicked an equaliser at the end."

Arsenal 3-1 Plymouth Argyle

Arsene Wenger: "I give credit to my team for doing the job seriously, and also to Plymouth who had a great game as well. I was surprised how well they were organised and how strong they were in every challenge. They did not die physically and were always dangerous on set plays. The gap between the Championship and the Premiership has been reduced and looking at the FA Cup results today, you could see that."

Paul Sturrock: "I am very pleased with the team's overall performance, but gutted to have given away those two goals just after half-time when I had warned the players what to expect. That really kicked us in the teeth, but we dug deep to get out a goal and if someone had told me that just seven minutes from the end we would be chasing the game against Arsenal, a world-class team, I would have bitten their hand off. The fans were fantastic, and I am glad we got a goal for them to celebrate, and hopefully they will go home appreciating the boys gave all they had."

Hull City 0-0 Newcastle United

Phil Brown: "You can go on about goalline technology but it is inconclusive and impossible for the linesman to give that. Shay [Given] does look like he has stepped over the line to save the ball. Damien Duff has done fantastically at the back post to get a touch, certainly if he doesn't Michael Turner scores."

Chris Hughton: "We have got used to that type of performance from him [Given]. He is a top quality goalkeeper and a top quality individual - but we wouldn't expect anything different from him. Their players are always going to see it going over the line and ours could see it for what is was, hit the crossbar, went into Shay Given's hands and certainly not over the line."

DID SUSAN SEE THE MESS BRUCE GOT HUDDERSFIELD INTO? It took a long long time to sort out his bad signings that were there just for the wages. It looks like he has learned the job, but the clubs he managed along the way suffered a lot in the process.
Maybe Keane is just going through the same learning process & will come good eventually.

  3. HULL WON if the line technology had been in place it would have proved it. Shay Given is a fantastic goalie but he is not deep down honest even if he is loyal. One of his feet was over a foot into the goal and the ball was caught mid body, it was over the line for sure even if the linesman & ref did not see it.
But as with 50% of soccer matches, decisions are made wrongly by one man on the pitch who is not perfect. Sadly with all the money in soccer these days it can cost clubs millions when bad decisions are made.
End of the day they have another chance this time but IT WAS A GOAL.

  7. Mark Hughes is an interim manager. In the summer, surely it's already known, that Manchester City will chase Jose Mourinho to take the job and build the squad.

  9. Too many clubs and their fans expect instant success when changing their manager, this simply does not happen. Generally speaking the most successful clubs are those with long term managers, for example Manchester United and Arsenal, followed in the next season or two by Aston Villa if the can keep hold of Martin o'Neil.

  10. Hughes was an OK manager at Blackburn. How can he suddenly become a bad manager. Or are there more to it than just the manager. Maybe the players also should start looking at themselves.

From cokrowinoto, on Sun 4 Jan 10:36AM
  11. Hughes does relies that the buck has to stop with him he is the manager he picks the team not the players they do not want to play, why leave the so called best players on the bench. Hughes has to go before it is to late.I have had a season ticket for 50 years and have never seen a team as bad as this one even in the bad old days when they were in the lower division they played with more guts went on Saturday and they turned out and played as though they were at a Saturday kick around on the park field no passion no guts and could not have cared less if they won or not.

  12. city are badly run club full stop....getting the money has made situation worse for them as they are in spotlight all the time ...mark hughes has proved himself at blackburn and for wales managers no longer get the time they need to turn things round just ask big sam ......things will never change at man city who have had more chairman and managers than most clubs have players (with exception of newcastle)
people need to realise that stability and faith in their manager brings success not a @#$% load of money
