Manchester City chief executive Garry Cook has assured under-fire Mark Hughes he will be given the time to bring success to Eastlands.
City's 3-0 FA Cup humbling at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday further increased the pressure on Hughes, who has presided over an indifferent campaign in the Premier League that sees the club sitting just two points above the relegation zone after 20 games.
The Welsh boss has been repeatedly backed by the club's wealthy Abu Dhabi-based owners over the past few weeks despite the club's poor form, and Cook has again insisted Hughes remains integral to the rebuilding programme in the blue half of Manchester.
"Mark is part of building the club, from the playing side right through to making this a great place for employees," Cook told The Sun.
"What we don't do is sit around worrying about what happens if it goes wrong."
Cook indicated the manager would be given time to add to the squad this month, with Hughes this weekend saying he wants to bring in five new faces in addition to new £10million signing Wayne Bridge.
"Once we get through the first window, when Mark's impact will be able to advance the future of the football club, things will start to settle down," Cook continued.
"Mark's plans and the way he is running the team are going to build and change and the confidence will start to build.
"We will bring people here who want to see the club move forward and the fans will ideally take to them because they're committed to the club."
He added: "Mark has played and managed at the highest level and knows what success looks like.
"He and I talk about that success all the time and we are not standing there thinking about 'what if'.
"We are thinking about when we become successful and how that'll look."

Before accepting to manage Man City, Mark Hughes, must have considered the players the in the squad. He was not thinking about bringing a bunch of new players during the transfer period. Man City has a very good team that is so badly managed. A very attaching strike-force and a dismally leaking defence. One week they score half a dozen goals in a match, the next match the same team lose by a 3-0 margin. People are fast forgeting the majority of the players in the current squad helped Man City finish in a decent position last season which helped them qualify for Euro. At one stage Man City were log-leaders. This is partly because they had a better Manager. Good managers control results. sometimes its better to win 1-0 against a weaker team and win or draw against a stronger team. Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and great other top managers use this method to win titles, trophies and finish in decent position at the end of the season. They plan their games in advance. To win titles and trophies you need to have a good manager. Mark is definitely not one. If Man City owners are thinking miracle will happen after asking Hughes to spend millions, I think they are just throwing money in the drain. No superstar is likely to come involve himself to fight against relegation, knowing very well that the very next season he'll not play in the champions League or Euro with the same club unless a miracle happens. If Ramos was not good for Spurs dispite winning Carling Cup, and Keane not good for Sunderland dispite taking them from Championship, then I don't think Hughes can be any good for Man City despite getting a few impressive scorelines this season. The sooner Man City get a new better manager to survive relegation and then bring in new players at the end of the season, then sooner the world will realise that Man City is indeed the richest football club in the world. With Mark they will fight relegation this season and the next season and maybe relegated the next
Fact : City haven’t won a major trophy since 1976.
Fact : Since then City have had :-
different managers with different styles, personalities & ability. We’ve had two ex-England managers including one who has won the league in three different countries. They’ve had different ideas & different tactics.
hundreds of different players players - some great some not so great.
a new, modern ground
different chairmen of different nationalities heading boards with many different board members.
So with all these variants over the years why no success?
How can so many Chairman, boards of directors, managers & players make so many consistantly non-productive decisions?
Maybe we need to look somewhere else for our ‘ scapegoat ‘. Is there any one consistant thing that has been with the club throughout? The only thing I can think of is the “ fans “.
I’ve just read a book that has made me think about things from a different light.. It’s called ‘No Limits’ by Joe Vitale. It’s about a state psychiatrist who went to work in the psychiatric department of the Hawaii State Hospital. This department was full of highly dangerous patients when he arrived. When he left several years later there were very few ‘dangerous ‘ patients remaining. A lot had been released. Staff absenteeism had drastically reduced. This psychiatrist didn’t council the patients. He worked on himself instead. Simply put the well-being of the patients improved not by talking to them or prescribing medication but by his attitude towards them.
So if one person can affect others with his thoughts imagine what 40,000 can do towards 11!
How long have we had this “affliction”? Does it coincide with - dare I say it - United’s rise to prominence around 1990? Is the dislike of United by City fans proving to be counter-productive? Of course, Liverpool and Everton have a rivalry but is it such a strong a “hatred” ( or disgust or whatever adjective is deemed correct ) as City have for United? Remember that while the red half of Liverpool has been the dominant trophy winner ,Everton have still enjoyed winning both the league and FA Cup twice, the Euro Cup Winners’ Cup & the Charity Shield 5 times . Much more than the blue half of Manchester. Maybe, just maybe, there is too much bitterness towards United. Surely we must be envious of all their sucesses & the endless “stick” we get at work!
CONCLUSION
Now of course there will be those of you that think that this is a crazy idea. Afterall aren’t all football fans more or less the same everywhere. Don’t we all demand entertaining, successful football. This being so why haven’t other clubs suffered in the same way. Maybe, with the exception of Newcastle, for some reason they haven’t. Are fans of other clubs less ‘ pessamistic ‘ & therefore don’t transfer so much negativeness to the team? Surely the often-trotted-out phrases “same old City” & “typical City” must give us a clue. Afterall the players change from year to year but invariably the fans and the “@#$%-ups” don’t.
Of course some will argue that it’s the teams’ responsibility to lift the crowd & not vice versa. Maybe it is. With so many false dawns they, you may argue, have made us like this. But if one psychiatrist can positively affect so many of his patients just think what 40,000 of us could do for City!!!
City gives Hughes time !!!!! Is this about City and football or is it a witch hunt. City are not the first and will not be the last to loose against a lower division club in the cup,it was Liverpool last year. It took SAF three or four seasons to gain silver for Utd.Do you want City with the reputation of being fickle and disloyal to their managers or do you want a club that players will queue up to join. With Hughes and time you could rival Utd.......

Thats it! A vote of confidence he's gone, Martin Jol to repalce him. I know these things........
I agree with Terry M..I am a Forest fan..so I am used to bad times!
But clubs that sack managers at the first sign of trouble are never successful in the long run..
Look at Ferguson at United and the problems he had for his first few seasons..
Bu the board had the courage to let him see it through...and much as it pains me to say it...he is probably one of the greatest managers the country has ever had..
So good luck Mark Hughes..and Forest to escape relegation this season..
I'M NO MARK HUGES FAN, BUT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND YOU MAN CITY FANS WHO WANT HIM SACKED ALREADY.
HE INHERITED THE PLAYERS HE'S GOT, IT'S NOW HIS CHANCE TO BUY,AND HE WON'T GET IT RIGHT STRAIGHT AWAY, HE NEEDS TIME.
LOOK AT THE TOP FIVE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE THEY HAVE ALL BEEN GIVEN TIME, AND THAT PROVES IT WORKS.
SO STOP MOANING AND TRY AND SUPPORT YOUR TEAM.
It is not easy motivating players who either do not want to play for the club, or have one eye on a move away. Common sense would say, give him till the end of the season and see if his new signings and management make a difference. If after this time we are still struggling, he cannot expect anything more than the sack......!
Just face the fact.... it not the managers fault, forest are a better team ;)
WHY ARE THEY DRAGGING THEIR FEET ! HUGHES HAS TO GO, OR ARE CITY JUST WAITING FOR REPLYS FROM OTHER MANAGERS THEY ARE SEEKING ?
