2008 Middlesbrough Stewart Downing - 0

1984: Born July 22 in Middlesbrough.

2002: April 24 - Makes senior Boro debut in a Premiership match against Ipswich, having graduated from the club's youth academy.

October 1: Scores first senior goal as Boro thrash Brentford 4-1 in the League Cup.

2003: October 29 - Joins Sunderland on loan.

November 4: Scores in second appearance for Black Cats as they win 3-1 at Gillingham.

December 8: Signs off with Sunderland by scoring in a 1-1 draw at Coventry. In total, he scores three goals in seven appearances while on loan.

2004: February 17 - Makes England Under-21 debut in a 3-2 victory over Holland in Hull.

February 29 - Unused substitute as Middlesbrough claim their first trophy, beating Bolton in the Carling Cup final.

August 14 - Scores his first league goal for Boro in 2-2 draw with Newcastle on first day of the season.

October 3 - Puts Boro in front against Manchester United at Old Trafford but Teessiders are held to a 1-1 draw.

November 4 - Lazio star Fernando Couto describes Downing as "a sensational find" after the winger tears the Italian side apart at the Riverside Stadium.

November 15 - Included in the England Under-21 squad to face Spain when he had been expected to receive a first senior call-up.

2005: February - Called into the senior England squad for the friendly against Holland on February 9. Makes debut as a second-half substitute for Shaun Wright-Phillips.

2006: May - Plays in Middlesbrough's UEFA Cup final 4-0 defeat by Sevilla. Included in Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the World Cup in Germany.

August - Makes first England start in a friendly win over Greece.

2008: February - Signs new five-year deal at Boro.

November - Answers critics of his England form with superb performance in the friendly win over Germany in Berlin.

  1. im scottish, i dont tend to heavily support england,­ but when you say that these players a s***, that is­ completely wrong... All these top club players play in­ the champions league and alwasy (in recent times) get­ into the knock out stages. As for the players below,­ they arent poor players, nor have they not reached­ their potential, because they are young. Look at­ rooney, he hasnt yet... downing will excel further

  4. same goes for lamps, terry, owen and most of the­ english team, all a bunch of over hyped idiots who­ after years of evolution of this great game still­ havent come to terms with the basics.......if spurs­ want to pay 15mil I say let them go for it...just for­ the same reason why chelsea pays lamps or terry over­ 100k a week!

  5. He is not a bad player, but certainly not a great­ player!
    There doesn't appear to be any of the­ "Giants" rushing to sign him. That in­ it'self tells you a story.
    A household name­ he's not.
    Boro' will overcome this so-called­ loss,his abillity and skill are questionable.
    Let him­ go. He goes into oblivion. His ptential has already­ been achieved.
