Premier League - Poll: Arsenal to scrape fourth

Eurosport - Mon, 05 Jan 14:38:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! readers think that Arsenal will overcome injuries and a dip in form to scrape into the Champions League next season.

FOOTBALL Arsenal players celebrate after scoring in FA Cup against Plymouth at Emirates - 0

We asked you where the Gunners would finish at the end of the campaign after a difficult start was compounded by the loss of Cesc Fabregas, Theo Walcott and Tomas Rosicky through injury.

It seems that most of you are realistic enough, with a whopping 68 per cent of almost 5,000 voters reckoning fourth or fifth is about right.

Eight per cent more thought fourth was more likely than fifth, perhaps hinting at a lack of confidence in Aston Villa, who currently occupy the final Champions League position with three points more than Arsenal.

The die-hard Gooners amongst you appear to have gone full-gun with the positive prediction, with almost three times as many going for champions than runners-up.

That is unlikely to happen, although 11 per cent thought that they might overcome one of Manchester United, Chelsea or current leaders Liverpool to nab third.

Final poll: Where will Arsenal finish this season?

Champions: 8%

Second: 3%

Third: 11%

Fourth: 38%

Fifth: 30%

Sixth or lower: 10%

(48241 votes since Monday December 29)

  3. I'm confidence Arsenal will be in the top four with or without new signings. The second half of the season where endurance and experience matters is the key to who are the champion and who are the pretenders. So you Liverpool dude don't get too cocky cause you guys are not there yet and never have been on the the good ship.........the SS PREMIERSHIP.

  4. it would be nice if arsenal fans thought more realistically. there is basically no chance of them winning the title. *cough* stoke and hull *cough*. as a liverpool fan i hope liverpool can win but it remains to be seen if they can keep it up. the top 6 will probably finish like this.

    man u
    lpool
    chelsea
    aston villa
    arsenal
    everton

sorry arsenal but your not going to finish in the top 4

  5. Clearly 32% of those that voted are clueless.
Its good to see Villa doing well, who have homegrown tallent and encourage our own youth into football unlike Arsenal who basically are a foriegn team. Whats that website Tallhub might be bettaer than this forum

  6. The fight for the championship is getting a little bit boring now. It has become almost predictable. It's the fight for the final EC place which is now getting interesting. Hope more clubs would be pushing for the spot.

  9. it has to said the gunners have the best youth team in the league, but that is all at the moment. its going to take balls and grit to stay in the top four this season which villa have in abundance. both teams need strenthening this month but i think this is going to be a great run in to the end of the season. it would be nice to see someone upset the elite, and why not the villa?

  11. Gabbi Agbonlahor and Ashley Young are class players, Villa deserve to be in the top four at the minute. If Arsenal splash the cash in January, I got see there being a good battle for the last champions league spot. I can't wait to see Gabbi and Ashley in the English Set-up, especially with the world cup next season. With players like these, with stars like Rooney, Gerrard and Joe Cole, we hav a decent chance of doping well in 2010. Still need a goalkeeper, but Joe Hart could be looking like the man

  12. Arse-nal will do well to get 5th this season. If I was Arse-ne, I would be more worried about Everton catching Arse than Arse catching Villa. Thats not going to be the only capitulation either. Just watch Slitherpool plummet in the new year. They have actually got their fans believing Pancho's impression of SAF, "We are always stronger in the second half of the season"! Remind me! What have Slitherpool done for the past 15 seasons? Started off in the top 4, then struggled to stay there! What price Wigan or Hull catching Slime and Arse and getting into europe. Happy Dayz!

  14. Nice to read some rather toned down comments tonight after the nastiness of the last couple of days. I have no views on first four but find it exciting as nothing is certain this time. Good luck to the fans who follow matters daily at their clubs.

  15. Arsenal will finish 4th or 3rd because it is clear we have dished the worst luck out of anyone this season, January you will see a strenghen in the arsenal sqaud ! MARK MY GUNNERS SHIRT!

  17. Aston Villa reminds me of Villa Mimosa/RJ.
But they can do well. Arsenal is gonna be the Runner-up to the Blues this season with
the Debils in third and Tools ranked fourth.
Otherwise keep watching the Premier League!

  18. Arsenal are not the team they once were, Wengers refusal to buy, and his continued faith in the youth team, means they re being caught by other teams.

From Had Enough, on Mon 5 Jan 7:35PM
  19. arsenal play way better than villa and play the best football in england but wenger needs 2 spend the money he is given 2 buy players like arshavin and shay given.

  20. Villa are doing great at moment but it gets tough now.Can see utd making a solid run have Liverpool got the bottle and luck needed to win?time will tell.As for Chelski third at the most not sure whats happening there. If Arsenal do have money hope they spend it,the injuries they have could see them falling further from the chase and thats not acceptable the fans deserve more.
