Spain's Bojan feeling sick

Tue 05 Feb, 03:00 PM

Barcelona teenager Bojan Krkic could miss out on making his Spain debut in Wednesday night's friendly against France in Malaga. At 17 years, five months and six days, Bojan was set to become Spain's youngest full international - breaking Angel Zubieta's long-standing record, set in 1936, by four months.

But the youngster, who played the full 90 minutes in Barcelona's 1-0 win over Osasuna on Sunday, is suffering from a bout of gastroenteritis which could see his introduction into international football delayed.

Bojan is just one of the walking wounded filling an increasingly-packed medical room.

Spain coach Luis Aragones is still sweating on the fitness of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, while Valencia midfielder David Silva and Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa have both pulled out of the squad through injury.

That could see Real Mallorca defender Fernando Navarro handed his first senior cap on Wednesday.

And the 25-year-old admits he cannot wait to be given the opportunity to stake a claim for a permanent place in the team.

"I'm coming into the squad with a lot of desire to train and to be able to win a place on the team sheet," Navarro told Spanish sports daily Marca. "I intend to do the best possible.

"Without a doubt this is a unique opportunity and I will work very hard so that I can make my debut.

"Just to be here is something to be proud of and a pleasure, and I intend to do well so I can play in the European Championships.

"First I wanted to be selected for the squad and then look to something greater."

With new faces coming into the squad, Valencia striker Fernando Morientes admits it is a time of change for Spain.

But the 31-year-old insists it is a mainly positive transformation which could see Spain beat France for the first time.

"France have always had very experienced players who are able to manage the pressure of international matches," Morientes told French sports daily L'Equipe.

"But the Spanish squad is changing, now we have brought together young players and others, aligning freshness with experience, capable of changing a match at any moment.

"Now Spain has the capacity to surprise France.

"We can do that if we play how we did in the European qualifiers.

"This team likes playing the ball around to unravel their opponent's defence and they have to show this against France."

Les Bleus coach Raymond Domenech is set to welcome back goalkeeper Gregory Coupet from injury.

The France number one has been sidelined for five months, but recently made his comeback for Lyon and should take up his place between the sticks on Wednesday.

However, the 35-year-old insists he is not an automatic first choice.

"The coach has put a lot of faith in me and that's comforting, but at the same time puts a lot of pressure on me," Coupet said.

"But a good type of pressure.

"And I know that Seb (Sebastien Frey) and Micka (Mickael Landreau) really want the position, maybe I will become second-choice again."

Coupet famously stormed out of a pre-World Cup training camp when he was informed that Fabien Barthez was to be France's number one, before returning and making amends with the coach.

But he insists a repeat performance will not occur this time around

"I want to be a good soldier for the France team," he added.

"To stop my playing you'd have to sack me. Even as a substitute I'd go."
