Tue 05 Feb, 12:45 PM

Middlesbrough defender David Wheater is pleased his performances have caught the eye of new England manager Fabio Capello.Wheater, who was turning out for Darlington at Macclesfield this time last year, was mentioned by Capello when the England boss named his original 30-man England squad for the friendly against Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday.

Capello said Wheater and three of his England Under-21 team-mates were unlucky not to make the full squad.

Wheater told the club's official website: "It's a change. Last year I was at Darlo and now I'm thinking about England so it's not been a bad year.

"Hopefully I can just keep playing and keep getting better and get in that squad."

Wheater is in the England Under-21 squad to face the Republic of Ireland in a European Under-21 qualifying match at Southampton on Tuesday.
