On-fire Maguire stuffs Murphy in Berlin semis

Stephen Maguire whitewashed Shaun Murphy 6-0 in their German Masters semi-final to secure a meeting with Ronnie O'Sullivan in the final at Berlin's Tempodrom.

Maguire followed up his 5-0 drubbing of world champion John Higgins earlier in the week with a similar display of clinical potting against a bamboozled Murphy.

It was the first time Murphy has been whitewashed since a 6-0 loss to Higgins at the semi-final stage of the British Open in 2004.

Maguire has admitted publicly in the past that he dislikes Murphy. Much of the disapproval seems to stem from an incident at the 2004 Grand Prix when Murphy notified the referee that Maguire had forgotten his chalk before their match.

Maguire was forced to forfeit the first frame before going on to win the match 5-2. It became clear from the outset of this contest that the Glaswegian was in the mood to impress before a 2,500 sell-out crowd in Berlin.

The Scot knocked in a long red before making an immaculate 77 to move one frame ahead.

Maguire was the dominant force in the second frame in moving 2-0 clear with Murphy failing to get ideal position on a colour a couple of times from fine opening reds.

Murphy broke down on 52 after a tricky red stayed out along the top cushion in the third frame. Maguire returned to the table to compile a frame-winning contribution of 51 by clearing to the pink.

The need for Murphy to stop the bleeding was obvious. He looked likely to win his first frame of the night as a knock of 65 left Maguire needing a snooker.

His opponent played a cute shot to snooker Murphy, who missed the escape before leaving a free ball.

Maguire maintained his composure to win the frame by one point with his positional shot from pink to black an item of real quality.

Maguire was suddenly playing like the figure who lifted the UK title in 2004. Another lovely run of 62 left Maguire on the cusp of victory holding a 5-0 advantage.

Murphy managed to move 45-0 clear in the sixth frame, but Maguire was sizzling by that stage as an immaculate run of 97 completed a 6-0 win after Murphy had played an unsatisfactory safety shot.

Maguire will face O'Sullivan over the best of 17 frames after the former world champion completed a 6-4 win over Stephen Lee earlier in the day.
