Moyes praise for Pienaar performance

Everton boss David Moyes hailed the impact made by returning midfielder Steven Pienaar in the 1-1 draw with Wigan at the DW Stadium.

The South African was a hero at Goodison Park in his first spell, making more than 100 appearances between July 2007 and January 2011, when he joined Tottenham.

But he found chances hard to come by at White Hart Lane this season and made his first Premier League start of the campaign on Saturday after rejoining the Toffees on loan.

Moyes said: "I thought Steven Pienaar was the best player. He looked as if he hadn't been away, he was involved in a lot of bits where we looked as if we were on the verge of making things happen. They tended to break down round the box or we didn't get the vital shot away but Steven Pienaar played really well."

Moyes' other deadline-day signing, striker Nikica Jelavic, also made his debut, coming off the bench in the second half. And his manager is keen to give the former Rangers player time to adapt.

"He did fine," said the Toffees boss. "He's only just come in so it's difficult to judge. He only really joined us on Friday so we'll give him a chance to settle in and be part of it."

  1. Piennar did play well but unfortunately very few of his fellow players were on form. Without everyone giving of their best and trying to create chances goals will continue to be in short supply. Without the input of Anichebe who has been our saviour in recent games we could well be in a much lower position in the league. I hope that the general performance against Wigan was a 'one off' for unless we improve substantially we could fair badly against home to Chelsea and away against QPR. We need to get on a good run so that we can improve our league positioon and progress in he FA Cup. We need to create chances for our new striker and hope that he can put them away.
