Heidfeld tops the times, Vettel fastest this week

Thu, 05 Mar 16:41:40 2009

With Renault and Force India Mercedes having already left the group test, the final day of testing at Jerez saw the remaining six runners lapping once again on a wet track. However, conditions improved throughout the day however allowing the fastest two runners in particular to put in a good number of laps.

Nick Heidfeld topped the timesheets today for BMW Sauber with a best lap of 1:20.052s. The German veteran completed 123 laps with his fastest time coming on his 92nd tour.

Sebastian Vettel's time of 19.055s recorded on Sunday however remains the fastest time of the week by seven-tenths of a second.

Kimi Raikkonen was back behind the wheel of the Ferrari for the second day, losing a little time after locking up and going off into a gravel trap. The Finn soon resumed and recorded the second fastest time of the day, just under four-tenths slower than Heidfeld.

Lewis Hamilton was back on track for the McLaren Mercedes team in what was another eventful day. Hamilton lost some time in the morning after the MP4-24 ground to a halt. Once returned on the back of the flat bed recovery truck, the defending champion tested a modified front wing.

The McLaren again featured the old, wide rear wing from the MP4-23 and the team again used flow visualisation paint from the front left of the nose, all the way down the side of the chassis - presumably to assess the new front wing. An off-track excursion added to Hamilton’s troubled day and he ended the session third fastest after completing 58 laps, 1.2s off the ultimate pace.

Mark Webber has been unable to echo the blistering test pace of Red Bull Renault team-mate Sebastian Vettel. Today the Australian was restricted to just 47 laps and the fourth fastest time, two seconds adrift of Heidfeld.

Kazuki Nakajima was fifth fastest in his Williams Toyota while Jarno Trulli had a less successful day in the works Toyota with the sixth and slowest time of the day, three seconds off the pace.

The week as a whole saw Vettel fastest from Timo Glock, Fernando Alonso, Nick Heidfeld, Felipe Massa, Raikkonen, Heikki Kovalainen and Trulli. Testing gets underway once again on Monday at Circuit de Catalunya, the final group test ahead of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
