Everton's striker woes have intensified as Victor Anichebe has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.
The Nigerian damaged the cartilage in his right knee in the game against Newcastle United on February 22 after being fouled by Kevin Nolan, who was sent off for his challenge.
Anichebe had a scan on the knee and saw a specialist in London on Wednesday but the results were inconclusive and he will now undergo exploratory surgery.
"Victor will have an operation," said manager David Moyes.
"He's damaged his cartilage and is out for the season.
"It's a blow for the boy as he'd just got back into the team, and it's another player we have lost."
Everton have already lost striker Yakubu Ayegbeni for the season while James Vaughan is likely to come back into contention only for the last few weeks.
Louis Saha has only just returned to action and Everton have played for the last two months with Australia midfielder Tim Cahill as an emergency forward.
Midfielder Mikel Arteta is also out for the season with a ruptured knee ligament.

Newcastle who .......!
rename Jordie Thug United. more fitting to the way they play football.
#6, so cos im a Newcastle fan im an animal?
Toon = animals. Here's a way to cure it - if you injure a player, YOU ARE SUSPENDED FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES THAT PLAYER TO BE FIT AGAIN. That might stop this thuggery.
#5 Well said, im not an Evertonian but admire the way the club is run and managed. Im a Newcastle fan and our club could learn big lesson from teams such as Everton.
David moyes does seem to have it all, but another example of a chairman keeping faith, i remember few seasons ago they were near bottom, and most would of sacked the manager, but they kept faith and r being rewarded, hopefully the same will go to boro and southgate.
#3 Bring Back YAKUBU, Where from? he's injured for the season you muppet!!
Bring back YAKUBU
Still in 6th place with a huge list of injured players. Well done David Moyes on being a proper team manager.
