Premier League - Taylor denies Ronaldo 'ugly' jibe

Newcastle's Steven Taylor has denied any involvement in a tunnel bust-up with Cristiano Ronaldo in which he reportedly called the Manchester United winger "ugly".

The pair were thought to have exchanged insults at half-time during Wednesday's Premier League clash at St James' Park, which Manchester United won 2-1.

Taylor and Ronaldo clashed on the pitch, with the Newcastle man delivering a forearm to the neck that sent the Portuguese sprawling into advertising boards, screaming.

However Taylor, who has learned that the FA would take no further action against him, denied there was any bad blood between the pair and said they shook hands after the game.

"There was no bust-up with Ronaldo - he was nowhere near me," said Taylor. "I have no problem with Cristiano and I shook his hand at the end."

It had been widely reported that Taylor's "ugly" taunt followed Ronaldo's accusation that Newcastle play "s**t football".

Referee Steve Bennett has confirmed that he did not book Taylor for his on-pitch clash with Ronaldo, and actually showed him a yellow card for a subsequent tackle on Michael Carrick.

The Kent official has reviewed the incident again and while he did tell Soho Square chiefs he would have booked Taylor for the foul on Ronaldo, which would have therefore amounted to a red card, under FIFA regulations, the FA are powerless to change punishments that would involve two yellow cards rather than a single red.

It means Taylor is now clear to face Hull at the KC Stadium on March 14. Sir Alex Ferguson is unlikely to be too impressed as he felt certain after the game Taylor would be facing some kind of suspension.

"I don't think he is out of trouble," the United boss told MUTV. "Something will be done there because it was two offences."

The FA have also decided not to investigate any incident in the tunnel, as they are satisfied any verbal altercation that did take place was of a minor nature and warrants no further action.

  16. Ronaldo is an amazing player. He is very skillful in­ all aspects of play and is a hard worker. He is a damn­ good actor but we have to admit that he is a target for­ Man U's opponents. Considering the hammering her­ receives each week it amazes me that he keeps­ relatively injury free and it must be that he is very­ much more robust than many of his critics might­ suggest.
