Celtic returned to the top of the table as they won 2-1 at Kilmarnock and Rangers lost 1-0 to bottom club Inverness.
Rangers started the night at the summit by virtue of their superior goal difference but they were stunned by Ian Black's late penalty at Ibrox.
Rangers have been in fine form at home this season but they were unable to break the deadlock in the first half of their clash with Inverness.
The frustration continued after the break and things went from bad to worse in the dying seconds of the game when David Weir was shown a red card.
Black stepped up to score from the penalty spot to take Inverness above Falkirk and off the foot of the table.
Celtic, fresh from a 7-0 victory over St Mirren, opened the scoring at Rugby Park courtesy of a Scott McDonald strike in the 27th minute.
Kilmarnock, without a win in their previous eight SPL fixtures, responded quickly as Danny Invincible equalised on 36 minutes.
However, Celtic were not to be denied and secured all three points when McDonald grabbed his second of the evening nine minutes from time.
Hearts extended their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-1 win against Motherwell, while Hibernian beat Hamilton 1-0.
There was nothing to choose between the sides in the first half at New Douglas Park as the score remained goalless.
It looked as though the stalemate would continue until full-time but Steven Fletcher popped up in the 80th minute to seal three points for the visitors.
Motherwell have climbed to sixth place on the back of a nine-match unbeaten run but they found themselves 1-0 down at Tynecastle as Andrew Driver netted for Hearts in the 50th minute.
Mark McGhee's men drew level at 1-1 with 14 minutes to go as Stephen Hughes slotted a shot past Janos Balogh.
However, they missed out on a point when Ruben Palazuelos fired home a winner in the 90th minute.
