Roma put their Champions League setback against Manchester United behind them and closed the gap on Inter Milan to just one point at the top of Serie A with a late 3-2 win over Genoa on Saturday.
Daniele De Rossi's spot-kick with 10 minutes remaining earned the Giallorossi victory at the Stadio Olimpico.
Rodrigo Taddei had put Roma ahead early on before Mirko Vucinic's strike made it 2-0 in the 17th minute.
Having dominated the opening half-hour, the Giallorossi sat on their lead and ended up paying for it after the interval.
Marco Rossi reduced the deficit in the 58th minute from close range before substitute Julio Leon levelled the score seconds later.
However, De Rossi's penalty, which was awarded after he was brought down by Marco Borriello, snatched all three points for the Romans.
And to make matters worse for the visitors, their coach Giampiero Gasperini was sent to the stands for protesting too vehemently at the penalty decision.
