Chesterfield striker Steve Fletcher has confirmed that he is set to leave the League Two club and return south to be closer to his family. The 35-year-old, who joined the Spireites last summer following 15 seasons with Bournemouth, was offered a new contract at Saltergate but has turned it down.
"It has been a difficult decision but in the end the distance away from my family is just too far," said Fletcher. "I want to continue my football career but within a reasonable travelling distance of my family home.
"I am disappointed to leave because I love Chesterfield and the welcome I have received. I will always remember my time at Chesterfield."
Spireites manager Lee Richardson said: "I fully understand Steve's position and in thanking him for his short time at the club we all wish him well for the future."
Fletcher made 39 appearances - 15 as a substitute - for the club this season scoring five goals.
