Witter Vows To Restore Pride

Mon 05 May, 10:09 PM

Junior Witter has vowed to restore some pride to Yorkshire boxing when he defends his WBC light-welterweight title against American Timothy Bradley on Saturday.

Bradford star Witter makes the third defence of his title at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham and, after seeing his fellow Yorkshireman Clinton Woods lose his IBF light-heavyweight title on points to Antonio Tarver in April, he's determined to put on a show.

'The Hitter' is promising to produce his best and denies Bradley's claims he has taken him lightly.

"This is a chance for me to pick up Yorkshire boxing after Clinton's loss. It was disappointing because I really wanted him to win, but Clinton was well beat.

"The big lights seemed to get to him but I bet if the fight was in Sheffield Clinton could have beat Tarver.

"It's up to me now to make sure I keep my world title because there are not that many world champions left in Britain now.

"I've not taken Bradley lightly and have had a long training camp for this one, so expect to see the best from me."

Witter now headlines the Nottingham bill following the withdrawal of local fighter Carl Froch's scheduled opponent Denis Inkin.

Froch had been due to fight the Russian in a world super-middleweight title eliminator, but he will now meet American Rubin Williams in a 12-round non-title contest.
