Flanagan sets US mark

Shalane Flanagan won the women's 10,000 metres in a new US record time of 30:34.49 at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in California.

It was also a world lead and 23rd-fastest run of all time in a noticeably fast race that saw the top three all set some kind of mark.

Kim Smith of New Zealand clocked a new Oceanian record of 30:35.54 to come second while third-placed Sally Kipyego of Kenya set a new collegiate best of 31:25.45.

In the men's race Australian Craig Mottram improved his personal best to 27:34.48 and just missed the Area record of 27:31.91, set by Shaun Creighton in 1996.

Gunther Weidlinger was second and set a new Austrian record of 27:36.46.

Britain's Mo Farah was a good fourth on his debut at the track with an impressive 27:44.54 run.

World Champion Bernard Lagat, meanwhile, won the 5000m and achieved the Olympic qualifying standard of 13:16.29.

Shannon Rowbury clocked world lead time of 4:07.59 in the women's 1500m.
