PORTUGAL

Sporting consolidated their hopes of securing a place in next season's Champions League after a goal by Yannick Djalo earned them a 1-0 win at Pacos Ferreira in the Portuguese Superliga

Porto, who wrapped up their third successive title a month ago, slumped to their first home defeat of the season when they were thrashed 3-0 by Nacional Madeira.

The champions have 72 points, while Sporting are 20 points adrift with just one game remaining.

Vitoria Guimaraes lost ground in their bid to finish second following a 1-1 draw at Belenenses. They are third with 50 points while fourth-placed Benfica, who are on 49 points, also failed to take advantage when they were held to a goalless draw at Estrela Amadora.

In the last round of matches next weekend, Sporting will host Boavista while Guimaraes will be at home to Estrela Amadora. Benfica will also enjoy home advantage against Vitoria Setubal.

NETHERLANDS

Sparta Rotterdam striker Marvin Emnes is interesting Feyenoord, according to Dutch paper AD Sport World.

The nineteen-year-old is also alleged to be drawing appreciative glances from Heerenveen and German side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Emnes has a rolling contract at Sparta with an option to automatically sign a long-term deal.

ARGENTINA

Boca Juniors beat arch-rivals River Plate 1-0, the first time in three years they have won the meeting of Argentina's two most popular clubs.

Sebastian Battaglia scored the only goal to throw the Apertura championship wide open, moving Boca one point behind leading trio River, Estudiantes and San Lorenzo with six matches to play.

Estudiantes, who top the table on goals scored from River, lost 2-1 at Argentinos Juniors on Saturday while San Lorenzo won 2-1 at Gimnasia-La Plata. The three teams have 27 points from 13 games.

Boca dominated the early stages at the Bombonera and Rodrigo Palacio wasted an excellent chance when he broke clear but shot straight at Juan Carrizo.

The hosts went ahead in the 14th minute when midfielder Battaglia shook off his marker to meet Juan Roman Riquelme's corner with a powerful header.

"Boca deserved to win because River did nothing," said Riquelme.

MEXICO

Guadalajara, Mexico's most popular team, qualified for the Clausura championship quarter-finals by drawing 2-2 at Chiapas.

Chiapas, already qualified, went ahead with a powerful drive by Brazilian Itamar Batista in the 30th minute.

Guadalajara, who field only Mexican players, replied with second-half goals from Sergio Santana and Hector Reynoso but were denied victory when Batista's compatriot Lenilson equalised in the third minute of stoppage-time.

Guadalajara topped Group Three with 33 points from 17 games, two ahead of Cruz Azul who followed them into the last eight despite losing 2-0 at Atlas.

Toluca and Chiapas, in Group One, and Santos Laguna and Monterrey, in Group Two, head already qualified with matches to spare.

San Luis, Atlas, Pachuca and Necaxa, who finished with the best records from the remaining teams, will play off for the other quarter-final places.

America, traditionally one of the strongest clubs, ended a 12-match winless run by beating Monterrey 1-0 with a second-half goal from Juan Carlos Silva.

It was not enough to prevent America from finishing bottom of Group Two with the worst record in the competition, only 11 points from 17 games.

However, they were never in any danger of going down into the second division as relegation is decided over three seasons.

BRAZIL

Palmeiras supporters clashed with riot police for the second time in a week after they were barred from entering the stadium to celebrate their team's Paulista championship success.

Members of the Mancha Verde (Green Stain) supporters group tried to force their way into the Parque Stadium in Sao Paulo after their side beat Ponte Preta 5-0 in the second leg of the final, media reports said.

Television pictures showed fans hurling stones, beer cans, sticks and stones at riot police.

"They started throwing all sorts of missiles," police chief Carlos Botelho told the Estado News Agency.

Police used tear gas, rubber bullets and pepper spray to disperse the fans.

There was also trouble during the second half of the game when supporters began letting off fireworks, sending smoke over the pitch. Police moved in, clashing with fans on the terraces.

Last Tuesday, fans also clashed with riot police outside the stadium when tickets for the match sold out and hundreds of supporters, who had queued all night, were left empty-handed.

Fans hurled bottles and stones and at the police and the trouble spilled into a nearby shopping centre.

CROATIA

One fan was seriously injured and 48 were arrested after champions Dinamo Zagreb, who secured their 10th league title last month, drew 1-1 at rivals Hajduk Split.

A 26-year-old fan had two fingers amputated after mishandling a pyrotechnical device that also injured four other people and police confiscated 111 flares before kick-off.

Fans fought running battles in the Adriatic city before and after the fixture, which has a history of crowd trouble.

Brazilian midfielder Etto snatched a late equaliser to earn Dinamo a point after Ante Rukavina had headed Hajduk into a 41st-minute lead.

ROMANIA

A Sebastian Dubarbier goal gave CFR Cluj a 1-0 home win over Gloria Bistrita and sent them top a point ahead of Steaua Bucharest with one match left after the champions lost 2-1 at bitter city foes Dinamo.

Cluj, who returned to the top flight four years ago for the first time since 1976, will win their first league title if they beat lowly city rivals Universitatea on Wednesday.

HUNGARY

Leaders MTK Budapest suffered a shock 2-0 home defeat by neighbours Vasas, allowing champions Debrecen and third-placed Ujpest to go level on points with them.

All three teams have 54 points with three matches remaining after Debrecen crushed REAC Budapest 4-0 at home and Ujpest snatched a late 1-0 win over Fehervar.

RUSSIA

Front-runners Rubin Kazan lost their 100 percent record following a 3-0 home defeat by Spartak Moscow but their closest rivals failed to take full advantage.

Second-placed Lokomotiv Moscow are six points behind after a 2-2 home draw with Luch Energiya Vladivostok while city rivals Dynamo are a further point adrift following a 2-0 defeat at promoted Shinnik Yaroslavl.

UKRAINE
