Simon Davey's job is in doubt after Barnsley owner and chairman Patrick Cryne said he is not convinced the Tykes manager is the right man to take the club forward.
A section of fans have called for Davey to be sacked after the Tykes escaped relegation for the third successive season and the manager's future will be decided at a meeting with Cryne within the next fortnight.
"He has to make a persuasive case to me why he should stay in charge," Cryne told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"He then needs to take that case out and explain it to the wider fan base. I want to hear more about what his plans are for Barnsley Football Club.
"That will be a key issue in our discussions, and whether he's got that ability to build a rapport with our fans."
Meanwhile, on-loan trio Andranik Teymourian, Adam Hammill and Michael Mifsud have all returned to their parent clubs.
Fulham midfielder Teymourian, Liverpool winger Hammill and Coventry striker Mifsud have all played a key role in the Tykes' survival.
Iran international Teymourian has made 11 appearances for Barnsley, including 10 starts, since arriving at Oakwell in early February.
Hammill, who arrived on the same day as Teymourian and Mifsud, has made 14 appearances and scored the opening goal in Saturday's crucial win at Home Park.
Malta international Mifsud has made 15 appearances, with 11 starts, and has scored twice for Davey's side.

nt andranik bt defffo hammill get rid of davey and go urself crine
At the end of the day (or season) once again we were not good enough, we play some decent stuff between the boxes, but have a semi-blunt attack and a sieve for a defence. The team isa now moulded by Davey, and as it is his team he should stand and fall by its performance... I say go. And as for Cryne etc, if the board got rid of him mid season then those same folk who are accusing the board of being too soft now, would probably have criticised them for jumping in mid season when stability was needed. Some folk just like to moan.
We haver a good club, a small but devoted fan base, we play decent football, but dont get the breaks.
We need a charismatic, workaday manager, not a flash harry and not a quiet guy. The sooner the better, someone to get rid of the non achievers and un committed.
Mr Cryne & co, you have 3 months, sort it!
Funny how it takes Cryne a full season of bad results and poor tactics from an inexperienced manager to finally say 'I dont think he's good enough', if we went down we would want shut of Cryne as well. Thing about Barnsley is we have too many soft characters in the boardroom and coaching staff. The wrong message is sent out when you dont put your foot down and tell someone its not working and if it does not change for the better soon you will be out on your a.rse. Lets, for the love of god, sign some talent and not players ready for retirement or sicknotes please and let them know if they dont earn their wage they will be out the door.
COME ON MR CRYNE
No1 Get a good manager
No2 as MEATLOAF sang
Two out of three ain't bad
so get Hamill and Teymourian signed
so we can stand a chance of a better
season next year
