Hull City manager Phil Brown played down an onfield spat between Geovanni and Daniel Cousin during the 1-0 Premier League defeat at Aston Villa.
The pair clashed as they walked off the pitch at half-time, and had to be separated by substitute Manucho.
Geovanni was substituted at the break, but Brown said the argument had no bearing on his decision and said the pair rowed "because they care".
"It had no effect on me as regards to making any changes. I didn't think Geovanni was getting hold of the game so I decided to give Nicky Barmby the second 45 minutes," he said.
"I have no idea what they were talking about or arguing about - if they were arguing. I was making the change regardless."
Brown added: "I thought we played some good stuff without creating too many great chances. The game-plan was right. We came and frustrated Villa and the longer the scored stayed at 1-0, the more chance we had of getting something from the game.
"It was an opportunity missed. The bottom three have not got anything from their games and it was an opportunity to put some daylight between ourselves and them.
"I said this was a big weekend for us. Next weekend becomes even bigger."
Villa boss Martin O'Neill spoke of his "relief" at the win at Villa Park, their first in the Premier League for 10 matches.
Villa had been in serious contention for a Champions League place and an outside bet for the title before their late-season slump saw them fall behind Arsenal in the race for fourth.
"It was relief at the end that we have won a game," O'Neill said. "We've thrown away leads against Stoke and West Ham, and tonight it was nice to keep a clean sheet."
Norway striker Carew grabbed the only goal of the game in the 34th minute, a controversial strike when he turned in an Ashley Young cross from close range.
There was a suspicion of offside regarding Carew's 14th goal of the season but the forward said: "It was very good, the referee made the right decision.
"I wasn't sure but it was good to see it wasn't offside.
"It was a brilliant ball, world class, I just had to put my foot on it."

If Hull go down it will be down to several bad decisions by officials in several matches! We may have been outplayed by most teams but we gave it our all in most matches, probably about 4 where we didn't deserve anything & got just that!
going down going down going down there,ll be no celebration when hull get relegation going down going down going down
Can Hull do a West Ham and beat Man U in the last game of the season to avoid relegation? I hope not go back to where you belong in a kickers league
Well, this Brown seems to be a man of troubles, just like a certain.....special trouble-maker, mourinho! He spats with other managers and players and now with his own players. He doesn't know how to handle defeat! In the first half of the season, he was making the headlines for brushing off big teams aside and now, his headlines are about rows and fights and fighting relegation. truly, it is not the beginning that matters, but the end!
Good result lads keep it there.

I respect Barry for saying he wants to play Champions League and doing his best to get it with Villa. I think he has played the most games for them this season so if he goes I feel it will be accepted.
However I feel for Hull having a great start then hitting Man Utd and Chelsea in a run shot down their progress and confidence went out the window from there.
I hope they stay up...Newcastle I feel need to go down and comeback fresh with a no squad and outlook.
Should Hull be relegated it will purely be down to that on pitch half-time team talk by Phil Brown in December. A mammoth @#$%-up.

What a pleb.
The majority of Villa fans are quite happy to pay our admission money.
Memories of O'Leary still linger and we are quite content with Martin O'Neill. We have faltered having been in a great place for Champions League, but we're not ready for it...YET....and finishing 5th or 6th is still progress for Villa. With O'Leary we could have been mentioned in the same dispatches as Southampton and Charlton.
And Dave H the Pleb, remember this: Alex Ferguson was into season FOUR, having been close to the sack, before Manure won anything.
Ask the average Cetlic, Leicester and Forest fans who would crawl over hot coals to get MON back at their clubs.
Sadly....and I hope I'm wrong about this....I feel AVFC will never see the best of MON as I have felt for many years, before he came to Villa Park, that he's the only natural successor to Alex Ferguson.
One last thing Dave H. Why knock an Irishman who show's faith in ENGLISH players?
I agree with leo well done villa euro again nxt season, but i have a nagging doubt about nxt season being a poor one for villa as they seem to be cylindrcal good 18mnths bad 18mnths, and we've just had the good. If Barry wants out let him go, but as read on this site's transfer page Alonso in villa direction is a non starter as he as said if he leave's l/pool, he will only play in spain and nowhere else, thats why the transfer did't happen last season. Just hope MON does'nt leave til all top players have moved b4 he decides to buy those nobody else wants, (Harewood Sidwell Knight and the one from spurs) need i say more if these players where top notch do you think villa would have stood a chance, but in his defence he has bought quality ( young x2 Milner carew + petrov finally @#$% good when is reo coker going to get a decent run in his proper position he's a box to box battler, which is what was wanted in the last 20 mins last night not final 2 mins of injury time, wake up MON spend early spend good lets get in 1st for a change
------We althyf inde r C o M------ where many sexy singles- who like dating and-- chatting there. I'm an open- minded girl from US, I-- am Waiting 4 u
A three hot bullets from, Walcot, Adebayor and RVP will send ManU to their grave today, Upppppppppp guuuuuunnnnnneeerrrrrrrsssssss 4444444444444444 lifeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Looking at the last 4 of the UEFA cup most of the teams don't really care about it! No Italian, Spanish or English teams in it.
The fact emains that the Uefa cup got massively devalued when 4th place teams were allowed to enter the champions league and the 3rd place teams from group stage entered the Uefa cup. It was basically saying it is a tournament for teams that aren't quite good enough.
i hear that this guy is such a good manager but yet Villa get no where in the domestic cups so what side did he put out there? Europe his could not give a @#$% about and in the league the wheels have dropped off - you Villa fans should be asking exactly what am i paying my admission money for !
Dave H.
Folk like you and all the others that talk about Villa's team in Moscow make me PUKE!
We hear lots about Villa having a small squad, yet when MON decides to use some of it he gets it in the neck.
MON most likely regrets what he did, but he thought he was doing the right thing at the time.
If you have a SQUAD....what is and what isn't a first team or a second team?
Look at Arsenal's team and subs bench against Portsmouth.
No one bleats about that because they won.
Arguable that was a THIRD string team, but Arsene Wenger has used his SQUAD as he thought fit.
So Dave H....suggesting Villa be replaced for using their SQUAD in Moscow....what a sad little berk you must be.
Just a note to say that no one within our game can argue if uefa say to the FA we are going to restrict your euopean places next year due to Villas decision to turn out the second team - this could have or may still back fire on our future european slots so the FA should replace Villa and put someone in who will represent us properly.
Steve i dont see your Villa breaking into the champions league position in the nest few years, subsequent seasons will announce the arrival of Man City, throwing a spanner in the works their is also spurs with a very large squad and good players lennon, jenas, keane, Pavluchenko,Giovanni, also dont count out Everton look where they are andd they didint have the main striker Yakubu and Saha firing on all cylinders next season will be much tougher with about 8 teams vieing for the top four and dont think the current top four are getting any weaker as a matter of fact they will even be stronger next season if you look at the way they are all powering to the finish line , i dontg think anyone is going to sit back and be displaced. You have a good manager in MON , strenghten the squad a bit more and see how it goes guys like barry who want to leave should be allowed to go and then build for the future. Okay
hull are a bad team only second rate players/manager no money div 2 team
Alex, I agree. If Barry wants to keep his England Spot, he needs to play regular football and the Likes of Arsenal or Liverpool will simply rotate him within the squad. At Villa he knows he will be a regular, indeed he's the only player who has played in all of our League games this year - an impressive feat, to be honest!
We proved this year that we can challenge the top 4 - but we need a bigger squad. Hopefully Barry will choose to stay either for another 12 months to see how it goes or commit to a longer deal. I understand him wanting to play at the highest level, but there is no guarantee that if he goes to another club that he would play in their Champions League games anyway.
Villa are only a few years off being regular top 4 competition. We should hopefully find players more interested in Joining us now after being in Europe again this year. MON just needs to have the money to splash on players.
Alex F, 4th place is Cahmpions League but with an extra round of games. And if they won th eEUFA cup they would have qualified to the Champions League. O'neil did not look at his draw before pulling out of the UEFA cup. It is not all Hull, Portsmouth and Newcastle. Anyway, Villa are at the right place, which is 5th or 6th. I actually think Everton will finish 5th.
I wonder if Villa will loose Barry? and if they do will O'Neil hold his hands up and admit his mistake I felt that Villa could have done much better in the UAFA cup had he not put out a weak team.
And perhaps a UEFA cup winners medal might have persuaded Barry that the team were moving in the correct direction but no the holy grail of 4th place in the prem, all that gives you in the oportunity to QUALIFY FOR THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE not the right to automatic entry!! so is a bird in the hand not better than a bird that may or may not be in the bush.
IMHO I do think Barry needs to stay at Villa my reasons it is a world cup year and does Mr Barry think he will spend very much time on the playing surface at Anfield or the Subs Bench he need a conversation with robbie keane i think.
His name i would think is the First one on the team sheet at Villa park and the England manager likes his england squad all playing regular football for their teams so dwell on that fact Mr Barry
