Newcastle United have suspended controversial midfielder Joey Barton until further notice.
Barton was sent off for a wild tackle on Xabi Alonso during Newcastle's 3-0 Premier League defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.
Manager Alan Shearer criticised him publicly for his "stupidity" and a newspaper report on Tuesday claimed the pair had a furious bust-up after the game during which Barton is alleged to have called Shearer "a s*** manager with s*** tactics".
Shearer offered no defence of his player and promised to fine Barton, saying: "He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down.
"I thought he could do something different. But I didn't think he'd go on and get a red card. I'd asked him not to do that."
The 26-year-old would have missed the rest of the season anyway, having been hit with a three-match ban for his straight red card.
A brief statement from Newcastle offered no explanation for the suspension and said the club would make no further comment.
The match at Anfield was Barton's first for three months following a foot injury. Defeat leaves Newcastle deep in relegation trouble, three points from safety with three games remaining.
The former Manchester City player narrowly avoided being sacked in 2008 after he was sentenced to six months in jail for an assault in Liverpool city centre.
He was also found guilty of a training-ground assault on then-City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in 2007. He was handed a six-match ban, with a further six matches suspended, following the Dabo incident by the FA, who could now decide to impose the extra punishment.

hey everyone, have you not noticed the conspiracy of silence,no player comments,no club comments, all tight lipped, just silence.wonder why.they have all crept into their little holes.
Joey Barton hes the man if he dont kill you his brother can!

ALL MATCHES ON INTERNET: PREMIER LEAGUE, FA CUP, CHAMPIONSHIP, CARLING CUP, LIGA, SERIE A, BUNDESLIGA, CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - UEFA CUP AND MUCH MORE
ALL THE HIGH LIGHTS OF PREMIER LEAGUE MATCHES
mad dog pogatez
The FA had the oppurtunity to do something with this @#$% and blew it.
Just like many others who have gone before.
Don't forget this scum actually wore an England shirt once !!!!
The Ivory Towers of the FA is partly to blame for this low life still being allowed to pick up his pay.
I hear big Sam fancies him at Rovers. As a Rovers fan I don't know what to make of it. On his day he is a very talented player but also a thug. If Sam can calm him down and get the best from him he may be a good signing.
I stand by Barton. His tackle was not that bad. I have seen far worse and what he told Shearer is the truth!
Being a life long Newcastle United i think the biggest mistake we ever made was to make Sam Allerdice the manager we have been on the downward slope since then. The backroom staff need to get players who want to come to the club not players who think they can use us as a stepping stone to get where they want! SHEARER to stay and learn his trade cos he really cares about the team.
One day soon the little thug will come up against someone who will permanently remove him from football anywhere anylevel, it may be , if they have any balls the FA, it may be on the pitch , but I'd really like it done in the gutter where he comes from.
I wish he could read these posts ( can he actually read I wonder ) and get really upset enough to follow up some of them but then again he 'aint a man not even an animal just an over paid piece of shi*
cos I tell you what you little w****r theres a lot of men out here who would do you and pay for the privilege
Newcastle have been on a steady decline for some time now, it was inevitable that they would be fighting for survival in the Premier League.
Another footnote to all Newcastle United supporters, it's such a shame that your plight is being highlighted by that so called to**er Barton that you have playing for you, I and i feel all the premier league clubs hope that if the worst happens and you are relegated that it will only be for the one season and then you'll be back where you so rightly deserve to be, in the premier, after all you have a superb backing from your fans, it's a pity that the board has so let you down, look at me talking a liverpool supporter and the backroom @#$% that keeps going on there, but all the best to you.
I personally feel that to suspend Joey barton is the biggest joke i have heard, he should not be suspended at all, SACK the waste of space, the bloke is a thug and to bring that sort of demented mentality to football is totally wrong, some football players deserve second chances, but how many does this bloke need, talk about not knowing what side your bread is buttered, Newcastle should sack him and all other football teams should refuse to have him, lets see how far this takes him in life when he ain't earing his £50,000 per week and has to get up at the crack of dawn and do a proper worthwhile job like the rest of us.
shearer is a @#$% manager, but 250,000 a game he does not give one.
Barton was one of Allardyce's first signings. You knew there and then that big Sam was not the right man for the job. What was he thinking? Shearer had him in the squad so he's no better. I'm a happy Manchester United fan, but Newcastle is a decent working class place and deserves better.
I am with the majority on this; GET RID GET RID GET RID, and when Shearer's gone tell Barton he could do a lot of harm with a challenge like that, just as Roy Keane.
Yes I agree with clint, I am a city fan and we had similar issues, to many jobless no marks saying were to big to be relegated and we ended up in the 3rd tier of football. It can happen to any club. Just one thing to add, Barton is a disgrace and an idiot, everytime he is given an opening his ego is his downfall. he hinks he's better than he is, needs to concentrate on playing football properly, instead of being the "BIG I AM"
Very well said Clint.Magnum
The waste of space that Mr Barton is should be barred from playing for any football team even sunday league pub sides for the rest of his natural life. And he certainly shouldnt be allowed to earn a wage from it.
So many of you go on about Newcastle's deluded fans. How many Newcastle fans have you actually spoken to in person? I go to every match. None of us have ever said we're too good to go down. None of them have said we are a "big"club. The press always interview a couple of mongs who do spout that rubbish but every club has idiots who hang around the stadium during the day, gravitating to the Press cause they have no job to go to. As for its fan base, its not as some of you said, well supported cause its the only club in a big city. Sunderland and Newcastle are less than ten miles apart but have a combined attendance of over 90,000 every week. Facts are facts, Newcastle need restrucutre and the team have underperformed but other club's fans should stop jumping on our forums and join the hype bandwagon and assume all Toon fans are delusional. Stick with your problems at your own teams and leave us to ours.
