Premier League - Newcastle suspend Barton

Eurosport - Tue, 05 May 20:41:00 2009

Newcastle United have suspended controversial midfielder Joey Barton until further notice.

2008-2009 Liverpool-Newcastle Joey Barton gets sent off by referee Phil Dowd - 0

Barton was sent off for a wild tackle on Xabi Alonso during Newcastle's 3-0 Premier League defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

Manager Alan Shearer criticised him publicly for his "stupidity" and a newspaper report on Tuesday claimed the pair had a furious bust-up after the game during which Barton is alleged to have called Shearer "a s*** manager with s*** tactics".

Shearer offered no defence of his player and promised to fine Barton, saying: "He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down.

"I thought he could do something different. But I didn't think he'd go on and get a red card. I'd asked him not to do that."

The 26-year-old would have missed the rest of the season anyway, having been hit with a three-match ban for his straight red card.

A brief statement from Newcastle offered no explanation for the suspension and said the club would make no further comment.

The match at Anfield was Barton's first for three months following a foot injury. Defeat leaves Newcastle deep in relegation trouble, three points from safety with three games remaining.

The former Manchester City player narrowly avoided being sacked in 2008 after he was sentenced to six months in jail for an assault in Liverpool city centre.

He was also found guilty of a training-ground assault on then-City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in 2007. He was handed a six-match ban, with a further six matches suspended, following the Dabo incident by the FA, who could now decide to impose the extra punishment.

We have enough idiots in Scotland, we don't need a little thug like Barton. People like him should be in jail not being paid obscene sums of money.

  6. Barton got red card for a bad foul and got suspended for 3 games - fair enough. He then told Shearer that he was a s**t manager with s**t tactics. What was wrong with that? He's only telling the truth and Barton knows a s**t manager when he sees one, after working with Stuart Pearce, Sam Allardyce, Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear and Chris Houghton.

  7. I don't agree with Barton's outburst especially whilst Newcastle are supposed to be fighting for survival and need every player to focus on the main task. However as a Blackburn Rovers fan I am really happy that Shearer didn't take the managers post at our club as he is obviouslt out of his league and tactically inept. As a player he was a legend for us but as a manager he is not the saviour you really need. Good luck for your remaining three games and hope you survive, not at the expense of us tho !

  11. Barton has had his chances and been given more than any player he is toally out of control of his temper some people are saying its his commitment to the team effort well if you believe that why is he unavailable for the team in the next three games thats not commitment its hiding away he can now say he had nothing to do with any of the results at the end of the season he has chosen to get sent off dont tell me he didnt know what he was doing he has been paid very highly this season for a hand full of games and had highly expensive medical treatment at no cost he is laughing all the way to the bank and guess what when the toon eventually get some guts and get rid of him someone will come along and give him another contract to play for them and it is the supporters who will pay for it

Lucky to still be playing after his attack on Dabo, and sticking the cigar in young
Tandys face and attacking the young Everton fan.
Not to mention his 2 brushes with the police

back in the 1970's and 80's there was loads of players like barton no one was ever calling for their heads or demonising them like paedophiles. You are all over reacting because the majority always do. It was characters like barton back in the day that made english football great. Also how many averae joes on the street have fought and battered someone on a night out on the lash ?? i bet the majority who post here have done silimar things or know someone who has. So its pretty pathetic the majority here take the moral high ground just look at any town or city high street at the weekend. Barton has paid for his crimes..its his status that makes you all attack him like you all do. Get off the mans back everyone deserves a second chance.

  17. so what he got sent off. At least one player was trying on sunday. The whole ban thing is to deflect from the teams problems. If a player has passion and stands up for what he thinks is right, and bearing in mind the geordies are utter @#$%.Then why dont you kick all the problem players out who give a damb. Oh wait he got a standing ovation when walking off the field. But hey he did tell shearer where to go though, and he is such a hero. Wow getting sent off is such a bad thing. I will be glad when nufc get relegated. The deluded fans deserve it. Face it if you still had big sam you would not be in this position. And shearer has as much tactical nouce as i do playing championship manager. Come on you irons

  19. Football needs to be cleaned up and they ought to start with Barton - ban him from football and whilst we are at it lets ban the writhing around on the ground that causes players to be sent off. Tranmere Rovers were leading Scunthorpe 1-0 on saturday with two minutes to go and on the way to the playofs - then a Tranmere player tackles a Scunny player who writhes round on the ground and then, when the Tranmere player is sent off the Scunny player gets up and walks away. That undeserved red card cost Trannere a goal. So FA clean up football completely - starting with Barton and all the other scum who pull on a football shirt
