Premier League - Newcastle suspend Barton

Eurosport - Tue, 05 May 20:41:00 2009

Newcastle United have suspended controversial midfielder Joey Barton until further notice.

2008-2009 Liverpool-Newcastle Joey Barton gets sent off by referee Phil Dowd - 0

Barton was sent off for a wild tackle on Xabi Alonso during Newcastle's 3-0 Premier League defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

Manager Alan Shearer criticised him publicly for his "stupidity" and a newspaper report on Tuesday claimed the pair had a furious bust-up after the game during which Barton is alleged to have called Shearer "a s*** manager with s*** tactics".

Shearer offered no defence of his player and promised to fine Barton, saying: "He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down.

"I thought he could do something different. But I didn't think he'd go on and get a red card. I'd asked him not to do that."

The 26-year-old would have missed the rest of the season anyway, having been hit with a three-match ban for his straight red card.

A brief statement from Newcastle offered no explanation for the suspension and said the club would make no further comment.

The match at Anfield was Barton's first for three months following a foot injury. Defeat leaves Newcastle deep in relegation trouble, three points from safety with three games remaining.

The former Manchester City player narrowly avoided being sacked in 2008 after he was sentenced to six months in jail for an assault in Liverpool city centre.

He was also found guilty of a training-ground assault on then-City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in 2007. He was handed a six-match ban, with a further six matches suspended, following the Dabo incident by the FA, who could now decide to impose the extra punishment.

  5. as a man city fan i just knew that it would only be a matter of time before Barton dropped himself in it again, we had Barton but after numerious incidents it was decided that barton must go, he left in a blaze demmanding £500 000 leaving fee and spouting off about how he wanted to leave for a bigger and better club where he would have more chance of winning silverwear and reclaiming his England place, now to see him on the verge of relegration, an England place so far off he will need a passport to get there and to see him as popular as a mexican pigfarmer with a cough really make my day lol

And is getting stick for his reputation. 10. Hello my footie friends, it marnio here from the peru.\par
For many many months i feel the sorry for the newcastle fans.
first their hero the mr keegan and his bestest friend mr macerdermot leave the club to find a- better team, then they maker mr sheerer the manager- and he not make things the better he make them the worst.
the georgies very passionate about their football but the unfortunately the newcastle team very rubbish team.
they must go back to the basics. the manager must tell the players the the round thing with the air in that they kick about is called THE BALL. the things made of the wood with the nets on is called THE GOALS and the purpose of the game is to put the round thing with the air into the wooden things with the nets on.
newcastle players and the manager mr sheerer must then be given the long rest in the retirement home. they not the good enough for the premiership football they the rubbish side.

  12. bri.1000 you are dillusional, say hello to 4 in a row!!! But I do agree with you on Barton, he's animal who shouldn't be allowed the luxury of pulling on a football jersey ever again. How many 2nd chances do people give him, only for him to let him down. What about all the fans out there that have never had the chance to realise the dream and play football professionally, he's scum that was just good enough to play football but it's gotten to the stage now that the talent has disappeared and it's a thug who is picking up 60 grand a week and making a mug of all us who pay to watch a football game, remember we are the one's that pay player's wages and allow them to live in luxury and not have to worry about money for the rest of their lives. And this is how we are repayed, by ar+eholes like him. Ban him for life is what I say.

Quote: I'm glad uyou mentioned the kick in the head that Shearer gave Ugo at villa He did the same thing to Neil Lennon at Leicester and got away with it and he was forever using his elbows
QUESTION: If Shearer gave Ugo a kick in the head and did the same thing to Neil Lennon he must have been some kind of a freak as player as you say he was forever using his elbows.
How the bloody hell did he manage that? Doh!
