Newcastle United have suspended controversial midfielder Joey Barton until further notice.
Barton was sent off for a wild tackle on Xabi Alonso during Newcastle's 3-0 Premier League defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.
Manager Alan Shearer criticised him publicly for his "stupidity" and a newspaper report on Tuesday claimed the pair had a furious bust-up after the game during which Barton is alleged to have called Shearer "a s*** manager with s*** tactics".
Shearer offered no defence of his player and promised to fine Barton, saying: "He deserved to be sent off, he has let himself and the club down.
"I thought he could do something different. But I didn't think he'd go on and get a red card. I'd asked him not to do that."
The 26-year-old would have missed the rest of the season anyway, having been hit with a three-match ban for his straight red card.
A brief statement from Newcastle offered no explanation for the suspension and said the club would make no further comment.
The match at Anfield was Barton's first for three months following a foot injury. Defeat leaves Newcastle deep in relegation trouble, three points from safety with three games remaining.
The former Manchester City player narrowly avoided being sacked in 2008 after he was sentenced to six months in jail for an assault in Liverpool city centre.
He was also found guilty of a training-ground assault on then-City team-mate Ousmane Dabo in 2007. He was handed a six-match ban, with a further six matches suspended, following the Dabo incident by the FA, who could now decide to impose the extra punishment.

newcastle are not in a mess because of the barton tackle, they have only themselves to blame. high wages and lack of ambition is the cause if they had to live in the real world perhaps they would fight to keep their jobs, the aught to be ashamed of themselves and stop crying and knuckle down and get nine points.
then sack BARTON

At the end of the day, it's up to the likes of you to vote with your feet and boycott these venues totally. Only with this direct action shall the FA see how damaging it can get to be totally ignored. With the riding passion the British unfortunately have for the game, the FA is playing the likes of the supporters like puppets on strings. Again, if the genuine supporter doesn't like the thuggery and associated incidents going on, on the field, why not save the hard earned cash for a better cause.
The blame can only be laid square on the doorstep of the consumer in the end.

Your post on here indicates to all of us that you are just as bad in this department.

Is that all you are capable of contributing on here? Why don't you think before typing such tripe on here?
FACK HES BROLAR ASWELL. MARDERAN. BOSTURD.
Who is this bloke Burton and who does play for ?
FACK JOEY BERTON
how much longer are we expected to have to tolerate this out and out thuggery in the name of sport? time and time again so called hard men in football go into tackles with no regard to their fellow professionals health or safety. football clubs should follow newcastle united`s example and slap a suspension plus a hefty on ALL offending players proved to be guilty of reckless or dangerous play. it only takes one bad tackle to end a players career regardless of how many millions he cost the club. the children of today emulate these people, they dont need role models like Joey Barton.

I would like to take the opportunity in thanking you for your comment on my comment. Judging by the contents of mail on here, most writers have remained in the schoolyard. And that is the problem with the society as a whole. It shows that the majority of us get older in number, bigger physically but mentally remain as we were in elementary school. Combine this with fame and fortune (at the expense of the ordinary employee/slave on £7 per hour of course) and the gunpowder is set to go up. It's just a pity that there are not more normal people on here like you Dave T....cheers mate.
( dabpost ) ( I am asking you all white people this question: If Burton was a Black person, will he be still be playing football and getting 40,000 pounds a week? ).......if he was Black dabpost he'd have more F**king sense...someone needs to end his career with a multi-million pound law suit......and sue the club too for hiring such a deadbeat thug and passing him off as a footballer ....remember "Vinnie Jones"....he was another ape in "footie strip".
patrickodonnell1966: And another thing is, Joey Barton is 26 years old, not a kid, as you so put it.
Shut up Dabpost you black racist F#ck color has nothing to do with it and you wonder why we whites dont like you, stop blaming everything on race, how about Drogba throwing coins into the crowd or is that different keep of this site and go read Ebony or something F#ck off "UP THE BAGGIES"
No one seems to have considered the encouragement that JB has has had by the FA to continue with his thuggery. A scant few months ago his understudy, one Mr. Guthrie savagely attacked a Hull City player in front of 50,000 witnesses - not once, but having failed to inflict severe damage the first time, he attacked again immediately leaving Hull Forward Craig Fagan with a fractured leg. The FA gave only the standard 3 match ban - Craig Ragan was out of the game and the Hull City Team for several months.
Until the FA give meaningful penalties to these serial, violent offenders, crazy attacks will continue to happen and good, honest footballers will be out of the game long term ofr even permenantly.
FA for goodness sake get a grip of the situation and where a clear cut, violent attack, is seen on another professional give a proper penalty - I would suggest 6 matches where no serious injury is caused and double the victims recovery time where an actual injury is caused. For repeat offenders - a repeated ban = a lifetime ban.
patrickodonnell1966:
