No bus tour for Wolves

Tue 05 May, 02:38 PM

Wolves' promotion celebrations have been hampered by the news the Black Country club will not have an open-top bus parade to show off the Championship trophy.

Talks have been under way for some time between Wolves' Safety Advisory Group, which includes Wolverhampton City Council, West Midlands Police and other emergency services.

However, despite the best efforts of everyone involved, it has been decided the number of health and safety issues needed to overcome in such a small amount of time was too great to get the idea off the ground.

Chief executive Jez Moxey explained on the club's official website: "After lengthy discussions we have taken the view that we would need a lot more time to plan a safe parade - time that we just don't have in order to keep it current.

"We area living in a very different culture when it comes to health and safety issues. Last time when the parade took place in 2003 it was the council who took responsibility, but the onus now falls on us to take full liability for any problems which might occur on the streets of Wolverhampton. And simply put, we do not possess the required expertise to manage such an event safely.

"The secondary issue has also been that since we clinched promotion there has already been plenty of opportunity for supports to celebrate. Thousands upon thousands of fans have been able to share in the achievements of 2008/09 and, while it is unfortunate we are unable to add to it with a bus tour, we hope everyone understands the reasons behind the decision."
