Barnsley owner and chairman Patrick Cryne is not convinced manager Simon Davey is the right man to take the club forward.
A section of fans have called for Davey to be sacked after the Tykes escaped relegation for the third successive season and the manager's future will be decided at a meeting with Cryne within the next fortnight.
"He has to make a persuasive case to me why he should stay in charge," Cryne told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"He then needs to take that case out and explain it to the wider fan base. I want to hear more about what his plans are for Barnsley Football Club.
"That will be a key issue in our discussions, and whether he's got that ability to build a rapport with our fans."

If he was as successful at Oakwell as he was at I-SOFT
we would be in champions league by now
Don't get me wrong he is doing a good job but with a better manager
he would be a better chairman
Fellow Barnsley fans should kown their limitations on football expertise. For example ninety percent of fans thought Ronnie Glavin was a mug when he arrived. Plus they always need someone to have a go at, whatever. We have an exellent man at the helm in Patrick Cryne who is by far more successful in his ventures than most and we should support HIM in whoever he appoints as Manager, be that Simon Davey or another. I don't know how he puts up with the job and wouldn't be surprised if the fans don't drive him out. Then back to administration and I can't see us being so lucky in future.
COME ON MR CRYNE
No1 Get a good manager
No2 as MEATLOAF sang
Two out of three ain't bad
so get Hamill and Teymourian signed
so we can stand a chance of a better
season next year
