No Asif Decision Until Sunday

Thu 05 Jun, 07:09 PM

Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Asif will remain in detention in Dubai until Sunday when his case comes up again before the magistrate of a special drugs court.

Asif was detained by authorities early on Sunday at Dubai International Airport on suspicion of possession of drugs.

The 25-year-old, who was returning to Pakistan from Mumbai after playing for Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League, was held after a small quantity of powder was found in his wallet by United Arab Emirates customs officials.

Pakistan Cricket Board media manager Raza Rashid said on Thursday: "The court has taken Asif's statement.

"The next hearing of the case will be on Sunday. No charges have been made as yet."

Friday and Saturday are holidays in the Middle East.

Blood and urine tests have been carried out on Asif and the powder in his possession was sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Prosecutors received the results of the blood and urine tests yesterday, while a report on the analysis of the powder was obtained today.

Rashid was unable to disclose the contents of the test reports.

"We haven't received any information as yet from our (PCB) officials in Dubai," he added.

PCB human resources director Nadeem Akram, who was rushed to Dubai to help release Asif, earlier told The News: "The test results were delayed because Dubai is going through a period of mourning following a death in the royal family.

"The public prosecutor will make a decision whether to press charges or release Asif only after reviewing those reports."

IPL chief executive Sundar Raman has revealed Asif could face a ban from the league if he is found guilty.

He told Indian TV channel Times Now: "We have a zero tolerance policy towards players doping. He could face an IPL ban if found guilty.

"A decision on Asif will be taken once his lab test results are released."

Asif has been dropped from the Pakistan team for the one-day tri-series against Bangladesh and India.
