The Coupe de la Ligue is in danger of extinction, according to French football league president Frederic Thiriez.

Several top flight clubs have demanded the league cup competition's Europa League berth be awarded to the team that finishes fifth in Ligue 1 instead.

But France Television, who own the rights to show Coupe games, are adamant they will withdrawn their money should that happen.

That would mean a loss of around 10 million euros for the LFP.

Thiriez said: "There are ongoing discussions with those involved and nothing's set in stone.

"It has not yet been established whether there will be a Coupe de la Ligue next year.

"It's a decision to be taken by the Ligue's board between now and the beginning of July.

"The matter hasn't been called to a halt, we are still discussing it."
