Premier League - Quinn asks Bruce to find 'rough diamonds'

Eurosport - Fri, 05 Jun 16:48:00 2009

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has challenged new manager Steve Bruce to unearth a few more "rough diamonds" as he prepares for a summer spending spree.

Bruce arrived on Wearside this week with the promise of financial backing from new owner Ellis Short if he can find the men he believes can drive the club forward.

Quinn has warned, however, that Short will not spend for spending's sake after seeing the club only just survive relegation from the Premier League last season despite investing almost £80million in new players during the previous two years.

But rather than targeting marquee signings, the Irishman is hoping Bruce can be as inventive as he was at former club Wigan, where he discovered the likes of Wilson Palacios, Maynor Figueroa and Amr Zaki and reaped the rewards.

Quinn said: "His experience does count for a lot in this appointment, there's no doubt about that. He has taken many a rough diamond and polished them up beautifully, and the clubs he has been with have benefited.

"We hope he can do that for us. The good thing he feels right now is he has been told, 'We trust you, your record has been very good on that. If the deal is smart and it's intelligent, we will do it'."

  3. Why has Yahoo got no new Sunderland news? Yes, Steve Bruce may have gone back to Portugal to finish his holiday but surely you could gives us some transfer rumours to be going on with? As long as that doesn't include Michael Owen coming to Sunderland or Kenwyne Jones going to Spurs!

  11. Good comment Jack (25). What gets me though is when the nuggets up the road start insulting my home town, yes Newcastle City Centre is bigger and better than Sunderland's (that's because Newcastle is the regional capital - fact) but have they not been to/ seen Benwell, Scotswood, Cruddas Park, the Meadowell et al - glass houses and stones springs to mind!). Keep the banter to football matters - we hate your club, you hate ours etc.
Haway the lads, the future's bright, the future's Red and White, ALS.

It's gonna be a while until there's anything worthwhile to comment about on these pages so afraid we're just gonna have to continue in the vain of . . us telling you lot how much better we are now and you reminding us lot how great you were when my dad was a boy.You know the last time NUFC were good every team in the league wore black and white on TV . .

  16. FACTS TO BE REMEMBERED: IN 1987, SUNDERLAND WENT INTO THE THIRD DIVISION. IN 2003, UNDER MICK MCCARTHY, SUNDERLAND WERE RELEGATED FROM THE PREMIERSHIP WITH 19 POINTS. A RECORD ONLY TO BE SURPASSED BY DERBY CO.

IF WE HAD A CHAIRMAN WITH INTEGRITY AND A REAL DESIRE TO RUN OUR CLUB AS A PROFESSIONAL CONCERN, I CAN ONLY THINK OF ONE SINCE I STARTED SUPPORTING NUFC IN 1973, ( JOHN HALL - even a bit dodgy himself ) AND WE WERE INSTALLING STEVE BRUCE AS OUR MANAGER, THEN I'D BE MORE THAN HAPPY. HE'LL NO DOUBT DO A DECENT JOB. BUT I CAN'T HELP THINKING ABOUT THAT CLASSIC JIMMY NAIL SONG. " I DON'T WANT NOBODY ELSE. I LOVE YOU. ( S ) HE'S LYING." OR WHEN BOWIE CAME ON STAGE AT JOKER PARK BACK IN THE 80'S ( GLASS SPIDER TOUR ) AND SAID, " HELLO NEWCASTLE." STEVE MAN. HAVE YOU BECOME COLOUR BLIND. THEM GEEZERS ARE WEARING RED AND WHITE. NOT BLACK AND WHITE - YOU FOOL. MR T SHOULD TELL HIM TO " STOP ALL OF HIS JIBBA JABBA."

OH BY THE WAY, REGARDING MIKE ASHLEY. JOHN HALL HAS RECENTLY STATED THAT “What you have to acknowledge though, is that Newcastle’s decline had actually begun before Ashley arrived at the club. Some of the managers have been disasters and ruined the club long before he came in.” THAT'S RIGHT SIR JOHN. AND THE MAN WHO MADE THESE DISASTROUS APPOINTMENTS WAS FREDDY SHEPHERD, AND, TO A LESSER EXTENT, YOUR SCUM BAG SON. AND, MOREOVER, YOU ALL WALKED AWAY FROM NUFC WITH 10'S OF MILLIONS. WHAT DID SHEPHERD EVER DO TO JUSTIFY HIM LEAVING OUR CLUB WITH 33 MILLION QUID? FU@@ ALL. THE MAN IS A DISGRACE....

if hitler were running the club you would still support it,would go well with your puky reference to gas chambers,oh and it might take a good while for you to get back to the real world.once again your idiotic remarks bring shame on newcastle, youll,e be pleased no doubt that barton has elected to stay, goes well with your thug philosophy.

  19. Jack, for the first time in 5 years, i'm gonna enjoy my football!
I'm getting back to the real world of the scunthorpes and the barnsleys and the Qprs of this world and i am looking forward to it. Mock all you like, you have waited a generation so i don't begrudge it - yes, it is tough to take but hey, we've just got to roll with the punches. Our day will come, could be a while but it will come; in the meantime, i'm just accepting my lot and standing by my club . . .through thick and very, very thin.

From cameron w, on Fri 5 Jun 11:22PM
  20. At last some hint of reality dawning and being accepted (re: Tony's comment 16) - Preston are going to be too strong opposition for opponents for the Skunks = defeats home and away. Soon realisation will follow and they'll accept that next season is going to be another relegation fight and promotion just a dream. You've got to feel sorry for them, pity them even.
