Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has challenged new manager Steve Bruce to unearth a few more "rough diamonds" as he prepares for a summer spending spree.
Bruce arrived on Wearside this week with the promise of financial backing from new owner Ellis Short if he can find the men he believes can drive the club forward.
Quinn has warned, however, that Short will not spend for spending's sake after seeing the club only just survive relegation from the Premier League last season despite investing almost £80million in new players during the previous two years.
But rather than targeting marquee signings, the Irishman is hoping Bruce can be as inventive as he was at former club Wigan, where he discovered the likes of Wilson Palacios, Maynor Figueroa and Amr Zaki and reaped the rewards.
Quinn said: "His experience does count for a lot in this appointment, there's no doubt about that. He has taken many a rough diamond and polished them up beautifully, and the clubs he has been with have benefited.
"We hope he can do that for us. The good thing he feels right now is he has been told, 'We trust you, your record has been very good on that. If the deal is smart and it's intelligent, we will do it'."

yep mate Arsenal,Liverpool,Chelsea,Man utd @#$% . . .says it all, worth paying for a season ticket eh,whereas Preston,WBA,Boro etc ha ha isn't really is it ? ,you lot can just stand and wonder at what might have been if your team gave a collective s*!t and managed one measly goal against a disinterested Aston Villa . . only one measly goal.
Tony I think the two sets of fans can argue until the cows come home but there is one inescapable fact , we are looking forward to next season and can't wait for it to start, you lot are dreading the possibility of not being able to hold your own against the likes of Preston.Think about it,we get beat off Liverpool. . no shame in that, you get beat off Preston oh my we'll just be weeing ourselves to dehydration on a regular basis on here.Everytime you lot get beat it will be hysterical as you'll be playing such dross but when we get beat we'll be able to shrug our shoulders and say well . . it was Arsenal after all.The future is bright the future is red and white mate. ha ha how do like them eggs?
Good times are just around the corner. I have faith in Quinny, he has clearly been keeping tabs on Steve Bruce for some time and finally got his man. Everything I've seen on TV and read in the press convinces me that Steve Bruce will do a job for use and set us the path onward and upwards. Roll on next Season.
Tony, as I said, like it or not you'll be stuck with him. What would we want with him? Couldn't even employ him as a toilet cleaner as his with his anger management problems he'd end up with his head down the bowl ... then again... !
Tony, you spend more time on our pages than your own. I expect that becuse there's no news on yours other than, surprise, surprise, its lookinglikely that Joey Barton will still be at Hotch Potch Park come next season! No-one else want to buy him and you can't afford the financial hit of giving him a free (regardless of waht Mary Poppins might say). Poor little Magpies, I feel so sad for you ...
He's only a poor little Magpie,
His feathers all tattered and torn,
His team's down and out, spat his dummy out,
He wishes he hadn't been born!
Steve Bruce DID NOT discover Palacios. He went on a trial at Arsenal & Wenger wasn't convinced he was top class material, but Wenger reckon he could easily get into 2nd-rat.e teams such as sp*rs / Wigan.
ooh Tony don't like the sound of your cousin mate. For "rough diamond" read cheap as @#$% and desperate to play in the premiership, but I have faith he got Wigan to 11th place spending only 45p and a bag of cheese and onion crisps, what NE team would have sniffed at finishing 11th this season?
heyup bruce,
there a whole team of rough diamonds just down the road, going cheap fill your boots.
