Andy Robinson, sacked by England after a torrid two years in the shadow of Clive Woodward, has taken on an even tougher task after being named as Scotland coach.
The Scottish Rugby Union announced the appointment at a news conference at Murrayfield, following the departure of Frank Hadden in April after four years in the job.
Robinson, highly successful with Bath as a player and coach, was assistant to Woodward when England won the 2003 World Cup.
The 45-year-old former flanker succeeded him in 2004 but was sacked after two years having overseen 13 defeats in 22 games in charge.
In 2007 Robinson took over at Edinburgh and, after also working with the Scotland A team, beat off competition from former Springbok coach Jake White and ex-Australia coach Eddie Jones for the national team job.
"I have enjoyed being part of the national and A team set-up in Scotland in the past two seasons and working with the players has fuelled my optimism," Robinson said.
"I am confident that I can take them and the national team onto bigger and better things.
"With the World Cup in New Zealand in 2011, I believe we have a crop of players who can really challenge the world's best and preparation for that starts now."
Scottish Rugby chief executive Gordon McKie said: "Andy has been part of the Scottish rugby family for the past two years and has brought success both to Edinburgh Rugby, with their highest ever Magners League finish in successive seasons, and has also guided the Scotland A team to notable successes.
"He has a well established relationship with many of the Scotland players and has an understanding of professional rugby at the highest level."
However, Robinson faces a formidable task to restore Scotland's fortunes.
Short of top-class talent, they have won just one match in each of the last three Six Nations tournaments.
After leading Scotland A in the Nations Cup in Romania next week, Robinson will switch his attention to the senior team and his first games in charge will be the home November internationals against Fiji, Australia and Argentina.

only scotland would give this joker a job he must be laughing all the way to the bank.
If he makes a success of leading Scotland then his nationaiity will be forgotten, he has made a decent job of Edinburgh and I would love to see some of the talent that some of the players have emerging through the six nations and beyond!
I think a little perspective is needed here. Robinson has proven himself to be a good coach and has a solid knowledge and understanding of both current and up and coming players. To critisise him for Englands' woes is unfair, the team had lost morale and the set up behind the scenes was hardly helping. As for Scottish rugby we are seriously under-funded which hampers our countrys ability to fund and run professional teams. We can't afford to pay the players and to ensure they continue to develop they go further afield. You have to remember as well that these young lads have a limited amount of time to earn good money - are you telling me that you wouldn't move to a better company for a pay rise? I think what does need to be done is some sort of tracking system for young Scottish players so when they do move out of Scotland for opportunities the Scottish coaches and selectors are aware of them and their current form. It seems even England is to far at present to keep track of them - how many players are being missed as they stray past Scotlands Borders to improve their game and in turn chances playing for their country? The 7's is a prime example - if your not in the academy or part of the Scotland, Edinburgh or Glasgow set up you are not even considered, therefore some of the best 7's players we have are being overlooked. In short we have talent, we need to keep track of it, support rugby and increase funding and most importantly support the coach at the helm, not critisise every step. P.S to all those demanding a Scottish coach to ensure success - what nationality was the Welsh national team coach last year when they won the 6 nations??? Didn't hamper them did it!
I hope I can be a well-educated man's someone special. I have long legs, blond hairs and blue eyes. Im kind, well-educated, humurous and cute. Reach me at _________________ R i ch B eau ty Me et C o m ______________
Its already been mentioned but Robinsons main problem with England was the set up he was lumbered with (which is why Woodward resigned). Given the right set up Robinson could prove how good a coach he is.
Scotlands problem is not in the coach but in the organisation at all levels which means that the best players leave Scotland to play their club rugby elsewhere.
bad mistake. Think back england where not a bad team until robo took over, ok the pensioners retired but there was still talent in the team, look at how and how fast they fell from grace now scotland seem to be going down the same road . haden had turned scotland around but stayed too long so they went stale jones or white given some free reign could have taken scotland till the next level up not DOWNas I feal robo will
He didn't win it ..........that the problem with us jocks we think being second best is ok.I am fed up with this attitude and hope young ones are more prepared to work hard and get stuck in we need aggression and boys who can show it.
Robinson is plenty good enough for Scotland.
You can't expect Pele to manage the Dog & Duck!
A lot of you can not see beyond your prejudices and see what a good job he has done with Edingburgh this year. Good luck to him!
Oh dear Scotland. Why him?? Just dosent feel right does it?
We have got Terry Butcher assistant at Scotland football....Roboflop at SRU.........makes you proud to be a Scotsman ?! Do we have no sense of identity/pride or we just happy to turn up be whipping boys? fodder mair likely
Why the hell have they appointed an Englishman to take charge of a SCOTTISH rugby team.
Stick to your own contryman for god sake.
Where is the pride of scotland gone to,I will tell you!!!Down the drain!!!! and as for taking an Englishman as a coach.
I am sorry but I think national teams should be managed by a person from his or hers country.
Robbo's rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrubbish!
im english shouldnt they appoint a scotsman for the job .
I'm very proud to be Scottish.... I now live in NZ and I hve to be honest (not snobbish, most ANZ teams would take the piss out of most Scottish teams), Scottish rugby leaves a lot to be desired. I've seen some of the best in the world coming through in Scotland but with a fagball attitude we'll never compete with the all in, all die attitude that the southern hemisphere provides.
Forget the English/Scottish bigotry.... Your penis is smaller than your mentality and considerably smaller than your ability. Get a grip.... An Englishman is probably a good thing for Scotland... The best thing I've seen for England in my life timeis a Safee in the name of Mike Catt... An all round and confident player...
As a Scotsman.. Mike Phillips for #9 in any team in any country.... Celtic passion or just good sense?
so tigger if he does not win any autumn tests that mean hes oot?
I wish Andy all the luck in his new position, he is a fantastic coach, Scotland are lucky to have him, he is a proud and loyal man, i hope people will give him the chance he deserves, he works extremely hard and with great dedication, congratulations Robbo and Scotland- great choice
I think he will be good for Scotland. Remember why he was so poor at coaching England, It was because he wasn't allowed to pick his own coaching team and had his hands tied. If the SRU allow him to act on his own then he should get good results
Neil M should not be such a big mouth agreed we have ben poor for last few years but with our small player base we do well and will be back to speed soon! Maybe Robinson got sacked because of the overpaid and lazy England players with the players and resource they have they should be almost unbeatable! Gary Scotland
Looks like Murrayfield going to be well known for rock concerts than rugby now.
