Terry eyes club glory before World Cup

Fri, 05 Jun 16:24:55 2009

England skipper John Terry will edge closer to the World Cup with victory in Kazakhstan but he is determined to finally win the Champions League with Chelsea before turning his attention to South Africa.

Terry is still haunted by missing the penalty in Moscow that would have sealed victory in Europe's top club competition and was followed by the last-gasp defeat to Barcelona this season after Chelsea were controversially denied penalties by referee Tom Henning Ovrebo.

Carlo Ancelotti's appointment has encouraged Terry, as has the fact Roman Abramovich appears to be targeting the world's top players - so the only thing left is to become European champions.

Terry, when asked what is now needed at Stamford Bridge, said: "To win the Champions League. It's a massive thing for me. With what happened in the Barca game and the final the year before that, it is still hurting.

"We'll work hard to do our best next year. We're being linked with players that can maybe take us to that next level. As a player at Chelsea I'm happy and delighted we're back in for these top players.

"It seems that for a couple of years we haven't been but we're linked with the best players in the world again."

  1. I think that while we have players like Kalou getting a regular game, there is room for improvement in the squad. As a wide player, he is not fit to lace Robben's boots. Malouda can be a bit flakey at times, and IMHO we haven't had quality wide players since Arjen and Duff left. HOWEVER, we are currently competitive with ANY team in europe.

PS Mikel, myth or legend in the making? I really cant decide

  2. If mercenary Terry thinks Chelsea are more important than England he should never represent the country again and he's the CAPTAIN who else thinks his way and should step down.

Well if there is'nt a next level why is there the need to sign new players? Now i hate Man United but if Chelsea gonna challenge them and go for Champions League glorly they need to go th that "extra level" i feel if they mak a signing like kaka they could manage that they need a big name player who delivers and i feel they could do it.

  5. Chelsea have not yet been beaten fairly in this competition they have had it stolen at least 3 times through incompetent and cheating referees.

  8. I dont think their is a next level. Chelsea are at the top. Its basic bad luck and cheating refs that have cost chelsea CL glory. We just need to win it once then the talk of never winning it finishes and the pressure stops.
