Premier League - Hiddink Anfield move 'impossible'

Eurosport - Sat, 05 Jun 12:34:00 2010

Guus Hiddink’s agent has moved to cool speculation linking the Turkey manager with the vacant Liverpool job, calling it “an impossible thought”.

- 0

Hiddink was one of the front-runners for the Anfield hot-seat after Rafael Benitez left by mutual consent on Thursday, but the Dutchman will likely honour his contract with the Turks, said representative Cees van Nieuwenhuizen.

"Guus has shown over the years that he is loyal to agreements that he signed," Van Nieuwenhuizentold told the BBC. "There is no reason today why he would change such behaviour.

"Guus just started two weeks ago in Turkey and, as much as he likes the Premier League and as much as he respects Liverpool as a legendary club with a great future ahead, a switch would be hardly doable.

"Two weeks ago for the same reason he refused the position at Inter Milan post. I know, never say never and especially in football this is true, but for me this is an impossible thought."

Liverpool directors Kenny Dalglish and Christian Purslow have been tasked with finding a replacement for Benitez, who was offered a severance package after five topsy-turvy years at the club.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson, Aston Villa’s Martin O’Neill, Bayern Munich’s Louis van Gaal and Galatasaray’s Frank Rijkaard have all been linked with the post.

Mark Hughes (free agent) and Sven-Goran Eriksson (Ivory Coast) are outside bets but would come relatively cheap as neither have long-term contracts.

Liverpool are reportedly upwards of £351 million in debt.

  1. should be Hodgson.... he'll get the best out of a team that's being rebuilt and make some wise buying decision, especially if Torres (far too delicate for premiership football, just get rid of him) and possibly Gerrard who's entering his football mid life crisis will probably leave (don't forget that Rafa bought 77 players in his time and was given the money he asked for until the owners lost confidence in him). Something good could come out of all this (I hope).
