World Cup 2010 - Dawson trains in South Africa
Michael Dawson trained in South Africa after joining up with England's World Cup squad as a replacement for injured captain Rio Ferdinand.
Less than 24 hours after taking the "crazy" phone call summoning him to South Africa, Dawson jogged onto the training ground at the Royal Bafokeng training complex to become part of England's World Cup mission.
Dawson immediately headed for Fabio Capello, who shook him warmly by the hand and gave him a congratulatory pat on the back, with John Terry also extending his congratulations.
Dawson then embarked on a couple of laps around the pitch as his team-mates went through their paces in front of him.
Still to win his first cap and axed from Capello's 30-man provisional squad last Tuesday, the odds against Dawson lining up alongside John Terry at the heart of England's defence for the Group C opener against the United States next Saturday are fairly high.
Two of the more plausible contenders, Matthew Upson and Ledley King, were absent from the main training area this morning.
Upson reported a temperature, although any virus is not thought to be serious, and there were no obvious signs last night.
Capello is not taking any chances though and the West Ham star was ordered to rest.
King was training, although his work was restricted to the gym, as the Tottenham captain tends to do in order to get the most out of his delicate knees.
Once again, Gareth Barry was able to train.
Capello has vowed not to place the Manchester City man at any risk as he recovers from the ankle injury he suffered against Tottenham at the start of last month.
And Barry did train on his own this morning in order to maintain his steady progress, which Capello hopes will lead to the 29-year-old being able to train properly immediately after the United States encounter and be available for the second game against Algeria in Cape Town on June 18.

Whatever happens in South Africa i hope that it goes off peacefully. I hope that every player and officials do their job in the way they should, and that there are no politics on the field.Being english i hope that this will be our year for winning, but more than that i hope that the skills of all will be at their best.
martin b --- as you said, our team is @#$% but also to coin a phrase, we do it in the best possible taste
i dont know what all the fuss is about, ferdinand is only a footballer with a very limited ability in a team vastly over-rated by the media. the team of 2006 on paper where perhaps the best of the competition but they failed and i dont think this mob will do any better
Rio & Ledley King obviously have not been fully fit for a long time and we wonder a half fit player is really better than any others. Reputation always come in the way when picking a player and even a top top manager like Capello is no exception. Wouldn't be surprised if both of them can't last through the preliminary round.
Stuart - Thanks for the support , I know these guys IQ is no bigger than their Shoe size and friendly banter between old rivals is a good Laff but these guys just like the Sound of their own typing I think. I'm half Scots myself and would luv to see em them qualify but until they get a decent Manager to consolidate the Players you have its not going to Happen. Im off to Scotland next week and know I'm going to get my Leg pulled up there about the Football but as Kenny Everett used to say "Its all done in the BEST possible Taste"
Go on Daws, take the opportunity with both hands, play well, play calmly, you have the experience at club footy, use it well - so 5 Spurs players in the England team, who'd a thunk it. Great stuff, you chaps can do it
Martin B, I can only apologise on behalf of these guys.... Scotland are united against England. But, within Scotland, we are united against Weegies and the Old Firm. These cretins below epitomise the dregs of Scottish society... Ignore them, they don't deserve this kind of forum to air their views.
Goood Grief you Guys are such Dumb-@#$% Escalade what do you mean who is Mr Haigh who is the Dumb @#$% you have been speaking tofor the last hour and you speak about the league even though I havent mentioned it have you looked at yours with the 2 same winning it all the time get a grip
And I would just like to End with a Little reminder Euro 96 - McAllistar couldn't even Score a Penalty against Seaman and then the Ball is Booted down the other end of Field and Mr Blobby Gascoigne goes and Scores a volley in your Net .Now Lets look at your World Cup Record (its a short one so wont take long ) 2002 oh yeah you didnt qualify you came third behind Croatia & Belgium (who) in your group. OK so along comes 2006 and where did you come Ohhh Yeahh you didnt even Qualify again (stupid me) but the Good news was leading up to 2006 in the Games you played you did actually Score 1 Goal in 6 Games !! But unfortunately you did let in 22 and these are Teams admittedly like Netherlands 6-0 , France 5-0, even WALES beat you 4-0 and the Cream of the Crop South Korea 4 - Yes u did get 1 goal ...and lastly Hungary 3-0 and now we come to 2010 and where are you ohhh Yeahhhh no where (Surprise) In 19 World Cup Events since 1930 you Guyes have actually qualified in "8" World Cups (Yes that much I was surprised too) BUT the Bad news is you have never got any further than the 1st round in all Finals so Guys Admit defeat your National Team is @#$% and will always be so
Dudes have you seen me Say anywhere my Team is Rated , I have not , I'm just proud they have made it , in the Qualifying for the World Cup We have played 10 Games Won 9 and Lost one to Ukraine , but we have Scored a Total of "35 GOALS" in those 10 matches. So I dont think they are Slouches but they are just not Good enough to Win BUT they are good enough to be there , whichever of the UK Nations are at Africa with us ????
Show of Hands ............(the only sound are crickets)
To Mr Haig Comment 92 you guys are just soooooo Fulll of Hot Air & @#$% BUT as you have bought up the UEFA 2008 game ummmmmm Who were you playing and ummmm who Won sooo what was your point exactly you were trying to make .
You keep saying the same thing that everyone here is bragging England are going to win and being Pompous , I havent seen a single one and mention how great Celtic & Rangers are , they are good Teams and its a shame that they do not really have any competition in the League but @#$% happens. Just get a grip
Man alive its a Stuck Record with the Scots !! Listen Guys you'll have a every right toWhinge about England when YOU GUYS get a Team into the Cup , until then can you please Suck your Sour Grapes somewhere else its getting Old and Pathetic and let us enjoy the Few Rounds we are in the Cup either that or change nationalities to a Team that does get into the Cup.
Thank You
n.haigh123 - it wouldn't matter how many more times England won the World Cup or even if we never won it again, it would still be worth going on about it all the time to the Scots just to see how massive the chip on their shoulder will get. One day it will be so huge it might even reach the moon.
As long as Scottish fans derive all of their pleasure from watching England lose a football match then they will never be able to focus enough on winning an important match for themselves.
at last a decent centre back to play alongside Terry, Capello should stop bum licking the FA and Re-instate Terry as Captain as well if he wants to win this one.
n.haig123 = @#$%
n.haig123 says " AND NOT ONE DECENT ENGLISH MANAGER MANAGING THE TOP 4".
Get up-to-date sir/madam. The sleeping giant that is Spurs with Harry Redknapp (who's more English than him ?) were 4th. Perhaps you never noticed it (Man City fan ?).
As a Forest fan it will be great to see Dawson represent England. Hayley
Philip B
Talking of the facts mate Dawson I thought he is spurs product too, seems like we all need to get our facts right.
I really wonder if England don't win the world cup come if everyone will boast about their own players.
I support England whether they play with whole Arsenal team or none I wouldn't care.
Lets get behind the team and stop this childish nonsense.
As a villa fan I would have preffered Dawson over Rio anyway, but to miss out the way Rio has makes me feel really sorry for him. If Dawson does get a game or two (or three etc. etc.) I dont think he will let us down. He is a good player with a stonking season behind him. So good luck to our boys...E N G E R L A N D ! ! !
Philip B
