World Cup 2010 - Dawson trains in South Africa

Sat, 05 Jun 18:49:00 2010

Michael Dawson trained in South Africa after joining up with England's World Cup squad as a replacement for injured captain Rio Ferdinand.

Less than 24 hours after taking the "crazy" phone call summoning him to South Africa, Dawson jogged onto the training ground at the Royal Bafokeng training complex to become part of England's World Cup mission.

Dawson immediately headed for Fabio Capello, who shook him warmly by the hand and gave him a congratulatory pat on the back, with John Terry also extending his congratulations.

Dawson then embarked on a couple of laps around the pitch as his team-mates went through their paces in front of him.

Still to win his first cap and axed from Capello's 30-man provisional squad last Tuesday, the odds against Dawson lining up alongside John Terry at the heart of England's defence for the Group C opener against the United States next Saturday are fairly high.

Two of the more plausible contenders, Matthew Upson and Ledley King, were absent from the main training area this morning.

Upson reported a temperature, although any virus is not thought to be serious, and there were no obvious signs last night.

Capello is not taking any chances though and the West Ham star was ordered to rest.

King was training, although his work was restricted to the gym, as the Tottenham captain tends to do in order to get the most out of his delicate knees.

Once again, Gareth Barry was able to train.

Capello has vowed not to place the Manchester City man at any risk as he recovers from the ankle injury he suffered against Tottenham at the start of last month.

And Barry did train on his own this morning in order to maintain his steady progress, which Capello hopes will lead to the 29-year-old being able to train properly immediately after the United States encounter and be available for the second game against Algeria in Cape Town on June 18.

  1. Whatever happens in South Africa i hope that it goes off peacefully. I hope that every player and officials do their job in the way they should, and that there are no politics on the field.Being english i hope that this will be our year for winning, but more than that i hope that the skills of all will be at their best.

  3. i dont know what all the fuss is about, ferdinand is only a footballer with a very limited ability in a team vastly over-rated by the media. the team of 2006 on paper where perhaps the best of the competition but they failed and i dont think this mob will do any better

  4. Rio & Ledley King obviously have not been fully fit for a long time and we wonder a half fit player is really better than any others. Reputation always come in the way when picking a player and even a top top manager like Capello is no exception. Wouldn't be surprised if both of them can't last through the preliminary round.

  5. Stuart - Thanks for the support , I know these guys IQ is no bigger than their Shoe size and friendly banter between old rivals is a good Laff but these guys just like the Sound of their own typing I think. I'm half Scots myself and would luv to see em them qualify but until they get a decent Manager to consolidate the Players you have its not going to Happen. Im off to Scotland next week and know I'm going to get my Leg pulled up there about the Football but as Kenny Everett used to say "Its all done in the BEST possible Taste"

  7. Martin B, I can only apologise on behalf of these guys.... Scotland are united against England. But, within Scotland, we are united against Weegies and the Old Firm. These cretins below epitomise the dregs of Scottish society... Ignore them, they don't deserve this kind of forum to air their views.

  12. n.haigh123 - it wouldn't matter how many more times England won the World Cup or even if we never won it again, it would still be worth going on about it all the time to the Scots just to see how massive the chip on their shoulder will get. One day it will be so huge it might even reach the moon.

As long as Scottish fans derive all of their pleasure from watching England lose a football match then they will never be able to focus enough on winning an important match for themselves.

  13. at last a decent centre back to play alongside Terry, Capello should stop bum licking the FA and Re-instate Terry as Captain as well if he wants to win this one.

Talking of the facts mate Dawson I thought he is spurs product too, seems like we all need to get our facts right.
I really wonder if England don't win the world cup come if everyone will boast about their own players.
I support England whether they play with whole Arsenal team or none I wouldn't care.
Lets get behind the team and stop this childish nonsense.

  18. As a villa fan I would have preffered Dawson over Rio anyway, but to miss out the way Rio has makes me feel really sorry for him. If Dawson does get a game or two (or three etc. etc.) I dont think he will let us down. He is a good player with a stonking season behind him. So good luck to our boys...E N G E R L A N D ! ! !
