World Cup 2010 - Friendlies: USA down Aussies

Reuters - Sat, 05 Jun 21:48:00 2010

Australia gifted the USA a 3-1 victory in both sides' final World Cup tune-up game in Roodepoort, just outside of Johannesburg.

Striker Edson Buddle opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a well placed drive past Australian Mark Schwarzer's outstretched left arm and the US, who play England in their opener next Saturday, looked the stronger team for most of the first half.

Tim Cahill levelled the scores on 19 minutes against the run of play, and Schwarzer kept matters even with a good save from Fulham team mate Clint Dempsey after a slick passing move by the US from inside their own half.

But he could not stop Buddle's headed second just after the half-hour and substitute Herculez Gomez sealed the victory in time added on.

Switzerland and Italy warmed up for the World Cup with a run-of-the-mill 1-1 friendly draw when the holders played Andrea Cossu from the start despite the midfielder not being in their official squad.

The hosts were roared on by a noisy Geneva crowd and took the lead in the 10th minute when Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler fired the ball in at the near post from 20 metres with goalkeeper Federico Marchetti exposed.

Italy hit back five minutes later when striker Fabio Quagliarella, who surprised pundits by being named in the World Cup squad, looped in a header off the far post.

Visiting coach Marcello Lippi, whose strongest team lost 2-1 to Mexico on Thursday, played mostly a second string side and included Cossu for the first half given Andrea Pirlo and Mauro Camoranesi could pull out of the tournament through injury.

Switzerland's Valon Behrami limped off and Italy's Angelo Palombo was in visible pain after suffering a knee injury.

Host South Africa continued their good run of form with Katlego Mphela getting the only goal in a 1-0 win over Denmark.

Netherlands' winger Arjen Robben will undergo a scan on his hamstring which will determine his World Cup hopes after picking up the injury in a 6-1 friendly thrashing of Hungary in Amsterdam (see link under picture for more on Robben).

Until Robben's injury scare, prospects ahead of the June 11-July 11 finals only looked bright for the Dutch who had surprisingly conceded a sixth minute lead to the Hungarians through Balazs Dzsudzsak.

Good work from Dirk Kuyt earned Robin van Persie a 21st minute equaliser and Netherlands really hit their stride after the break with second-half sub Robben and Wesley Sneijder, Mark van Bommel and Eljero Elia all on target.

Slovakia's World Cup defender Martin Skrtel suffered an ankle injury on Saturday in a 3-0 friendly win against Costa Rica but he will be fit for the finals in South Africa after a scan showed no serious damage.

An own goal from Douglas Sequeira gave the Slovaks the lead before Robert Vittek doubled their advantage in Bratislava dust after the break. A late penalty from Stanislav Sestak sealed the win.

Ghana won their final World Cup warm-up match 1-0 against Latvia, thanks to an 89th-minute strike from Quincy Owusu Abeyie, in a match that took place in Milton Keynes.

England's Group C rivals Algeria again failed to impress, as they needed a Karim Ziani penalty to beat UAE 1-0 in a friendly in Germany.

Honduras's poor pre-tournament form continued as they were thrashed 3-0 by Romania in Austria. Daniel Niculae, Gheorghe Florescu and Mirel Radoi got the goals.

Serbia and Cameroon played out a goal-fest in Belgarde with the home team enjoying a 4-3 victory.

Six of the goals came in the first-half, with Milos Krasic (16), Dejan Stankovic (25), Nenad Milijas (44pen), Marko Pantelic (45) putting Serbia 4-2 in front, with Pierre Webo (5, 20) getting both of Cameroon's first-half strikes.

Eric Choupo-Moting (67) added a third but Serbia hung on for the win.

FIFA organisers have also chosen Uzbekistan's Ravshan Irmatov to referee the opening World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

  1. Go have some more lard on toast, you pasty git! You're not even winning this debate on your own turf.

At last check the US put together a ragtag team of part-timers and college kids and STILL beat England the last time we met in the WC. So you need to win this time around just to even it up.

  2. And someone said yanks are agile and athletic HAHAHAHA YANKS ARE OBESE @#$% WHO STUFF THEIR FACE FULL OF BIG MACS AND CHEESE! My grans more agile than yanks

  3. I like how "Degs" coming from a country that reveres cricket, thinks himself the ultimate arbiter of what is "proper sport." Anyone who would qualify sports as "proper" must play at everything with a limp wrist.
As for American athletes: They don't grow up kicking balls around, but throwing them, which is why we can pitch a football 60-yards downfield with little effort, while most Brit hooligans can't even throw beer bottles past their own shadows during a riot.

"Americans are athletic and agile...a lot of them play basketball, which possibly helps. And they don't believe they can lose--that's their upbringing."--Alex Ferguson

And YES, Tim Howard is our keeper. You know, the same Tim Howard who was the Premier League's Goalkeeper of The Year at Man. U.???? The same Tim Howard who broke Everton's team record for clean sheets in a season with 16, back in 08-09. Is he not any good, or are you suggesting the "Premier League" is VASTLY overrated?

You England fans go IF IF IF IF IF...................you would have won three world cups........IF IF IF IF ..............Why dont you just realize.....IF MAYBE U WOULD BE GOOD ENOUGH AS THE OTHERS PERHAPS YOU WOULD HAVE WON THREE WORLD CUPS....................... preecks..........shut up and watch how other team wins it on t.v. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL....

  5. amazing to hear bods talking about basketball and baseball stars as though they would be just as succesful if they took up a real sport (i.e. football) - i used to play basketball whilst recovering from injury because it was slightly more interesting than watching home and away and as for baseball i played rounders mainly to so that my sister and her friends could join in - regardless of population size England would have already won three world cups if it wasn't for biased referees, cheating south americans, and petulant Manchester United players too used to having it all their way at old trafford - the usa will never be any good at football till they get over themselves and stop having world series gay games and play proper sport like the rest of the world

  7. "I'm pretty sure that if England had a population the size of the USA we would probably have won the world cup more than once." quoth (anything but ) Sage

If it's all about "population" size, then everyone should just quit now because China and India are about to field the most invincible teams in the history of sport. And for that matter why is tiny little Netherlands always so much better than big, bad England? As everyone with even a particle of grey matter knows, the US' best athletes all funnel into THREE sports: American football, basketball, and baseball. If the likes of LeBron James (basketball) or Adrian Peterson (NFL football) had cared enough about soccer as children to take up the game, the entire English side would feel warm fluid running down their legs at the sight of the US team as it stepped onto the pitch. The greatest fear of England (and the rest of Europe) is that the sleeping giant will one day wake and devote even a tiny fraction of its resources to the "beautiful game"; in which case the yanks would once again relegate England to the dustbins of history (in the last thing that still matters to Brits).

The US squad is erratic and unpredictable which makes them a bit scary for supporters on both sides. They could field the team that put an end to Spain's lengthy winning streak...or the defenseless squads that gave up buckets of goals to the Czechs and Mexicans (albeit without Tim Howard in goal) .

Depending on which US team shows up in RSA I predict England will either win 4-1...or the match will end in a 1-1 draw. But both teams will advance to the next round...unless of course, they don't. ;) Either way, quit being total @#$% and show some respect: Howard, Donovan, Dempsey, Onyewo, Altidore...the US has ample talent. It should be a great match to watch, and may the best team win.

  10. I'm not sure why everyone feels the need to diss the USA team all day every day. Yea we call it soccer and no we might not be the most talented squad to watch on the pitch but we play our game and that's good enough for me. I already know people won't accept it if the USA does happen to win, due to either the absence of Ferdinand or some other crazy reason that I'm sure someone will think up but to be honest it doesn't bother me. I'm predicting a 2-1 score but I couldn't tell you who will be the team with the 2 all I know is that this should be one hell of a game.

  11. with out rio England's mf will play more defensively or capello will play defensive a defensive mf. leaving lampard up the field to help Rooney and with Rooney having support from a strike partner he will be on target. england 3-1 usa good luck both teams

From Pujen, on Sun 6 Jun 18:47
  12. England vs USA Lineups:

USA: Howard, Cherundolo, Demerit, Goodson, Bocanegra, Bradley, Torres, Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore, Buddle.

England: Hart, G.Johnson, King, Terry, A.Cole, Lampard, Barry, Milner, Gerrard, Crouch, Rooney.

England's problems will come from having too many offensive minded MF's and getting caught on the counter. The USA will absorb some pressure and counterattack. Eventualy, Donovan will create a goal for Altidore, Dempsey or Buddle. Once England falls behind, they'll push forward even more and get caught again.

Meanwhile, Gerrard and Rooney are in poor form and Barry will be rusty at best. Crouch is the most dangerous man, but without proper service, he'll be rendered useless.

    Prediction: USA 2, England 0.

  13. David w if you claim to no so much about england's history since we invented football please enlighten me. cause it is my belief correct me if I'm wrong but England has won the world cup as we no if now only once but have won it numerous amount of times before that.

  15. There are defensive problems with England. But the same can be said of the US.
Playing strategically, accepting a draw while looking for one's chances on the counter, would not be a bad thing.

From staubreyz, on Sun 6 Jun 14:21
  16. When the US beats England, we'll suddenly hear about various clubs chasing Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley and Altidore...The English media still think of USA Soccer as if it were 1994 when they struggled for possession vs a 10 man Brazil.

I can't wait for the English nation as a whole t get a reality check.

Alexi Lalas IS right...England are not nearly as good as they think.
